If you’ve caught Blackalicious on tour over the last fifteen years or so, you will have witnessed first hand the prodigious talent of Portland based rapper and singer Vursatyl. As well as playing a major role in the Blackalicious stage show, Vursatyl is set to feature on their eagerly awaited fourth album ‘Imani’ (released summer 2015). Standing toe to toe with Gift Of Gab, surely one of the most ferociously gifted MCs on the planet is no mean feat, but one which Vursatyl performs with ease.

Blackalicious producer and owner of Quannum Projects Chief Xcel discovered Vursatyl’s crew ‘Livesavas’ back in the late 90’s and invited them to join him on the road to promote the Quannum Spectrum album (which featured Jurassic 5, El-P and Souls of Mischief among many others). Lifesavas went on to record two critically acclaimed albums for the label, and were named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of their ‘Top Ten Artists To Watch’.

Now 24 years into his rap career, Crooked Straights marks a new chapter in Vurstatyl’s story; unbelievably this is the first time he’s taken centre stage to release a solo record.

Death tells Everybody that their time is up. But Everybody doesn’t want to greet Death alone, so Everybody seeks the company of their friends Stuff, Kinship, Friendship, Cousinship, and Love to make the trip bearable. From the scintillating mind that brought you An OctoroonEverybodyis an audacious riff on the 15th century morality play Everyman. Of the robust 10-person cast, five brave actors will play a multitude of roles with their characters chosen by lottery onstage every night — with a possible 120 combinations — as they fight to cheat Death.

Shad is a critically-acclaimed MC, regarded for his humour, honesty, and intelligence. His fan base graciously received his first two albums, and his third LP, TSOL, continued to pique new levels of international interest.

Born in Kenya to Rwandan parents and relocated to Canada shortly after, Shad has nurtured a broad range of interests and experiences since his formative years, including, of course, a passion for music. After high-school Shad put his nose to the grindstone and wrote his first songs while studying business at Wilfrid Laurier University where he later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. Sprung from his dorm-room and financed by the 17 500$ winnings from an unsigned talent competition, Shad’s first record When This Is Over was released in July 2005, and was characterized by overt introspection and social awareness. An unadulterated glimpse of young-adulthood, the self-made album bore promise of even greater accomplishments.

When 2007’s The Old Prince was released on Black Box Recordings, critics immediately incorporated Shad into the dialogue among the most well-regarded MCs in North America. The Juno Awards, the most prestigious honor in Canadian music, nominated the album as Rap Recording of The Year. The Old Prince was also named an official contender for the cutting edge Polaris Music Prize in 2008.

His third album, TSOL, continued his thoughtful approach which traverses soulful arrangements with sharp, progressive lyrics. Since its release on Black Box/Decon in 2010, TSOL was named a shortlist nominee for the Polaris Music Prize - Shad’s second consecutive nomination - and won the 2011 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.

Between tours and stints in the studio, Shad also completed a Master's degree in Liberal Studies at Simon Fraser University, graduating with an M.A. in 2011. With a supportive fan base growing around the globe, Shad has been hard at work on his 4th album, hoping to continue to inspire hope and joy while exploring the depths of his wide-ranging ideas and experiences.

Bright to Death is Film School’s fifth album and first full-length since 2011’s Fission. Recorded over 8 days in November 2017 on the outskirts of Joshua Tree, this luminescent collection of 11 songs is the finest showcase yet for the band’s signature layered sonic tones, psychedelic atmospheres, and seductive melodies.

“When this lineup first came together in the early 2000s, I never thought we’d be doing some of our best work 15 or so years later,” marvels Film School singer and guitarist Greg Bertens. “Our [self-titled] album came out in 2006, when bands like the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand were in full swing. The music landscape was totally different then—shoegaze was a bad word. That’s changed.”

“Crushin,” the album’s dreamy, melancholy opener (and first single), is the kind of secret message you’d put on a playlist for an unrequited love, in between Beach House and Slowdive. “Don’t Send My Love,” a dancefloor-ready ode to post-breakup spite, is complemented by “Two in Sun,” with its washes of pure, enveloping atmosphere; and the Paisley Underground vibe of “Bye Bye Bird” is a catchy counterpoint to the propulsive rhythm of “The Celebration.” But for all its familiar touchstones, Bright to Death constantly surprises the listener as well, making the album Film School’s most compelling yet. Take the title track, a hypnotic, midtempo hip-shaker primed for an extended electronica remix. Or the menacing “Go Low,” with its layers of sound building over a distorted synth track to create a sonic dystopia, while the bouncy, stripped-down “Waking Up” sparkles like the prom song in a John Hughes movie.

The Albina Soul Revue is a community soul music showcase of historic proportions. The event features underrepresented musicians of color once active in the Albina area of North & Northeast Portland. Performing original selections from the 1970s, these artists and their music represent a lost era in Portland soul. Chronically undocumented, local music from this period was rarely released—even on vinyl. Through the efforts of World Arts Foundation, Inc.’s Albina Music Trust initiative, this material has been carefully preserved and is now ready for the stage once again. The Albina Soul Revue offers a
unique glimpse into a time in Portland where the funk was undeniable and the horns, harmonies, and backbeat were always on the one. Not to be missed!

Event Sponsors: World Arts Foundation, Inc., Regional Arts & Culture Council, American Music Program, Vanport Mosaic, Marmoset, and XRAY FM.

Shirley Nanette
Shirley Nanette has long been recognized by the regional music community for her dynamic vocal
sensibility—performing jazz and classical works at festivals, on television, and with the Oregon
Symphony. In 1970, Nanette released an LP entitled Never Coming Back. Featuring a cast of Albina area
musicians, the record has been lauded by some as a critical piece of Portland soul music history.

Gregg Smith
In the 1960s, Gregg Smith performed at iconic local soul venue, the Cotton Club. There he sat in with
legendary acts of the time such as Etta James, The Whispers, and Grover Washington Jr. Gregg has since
relocated to Dallas, Texas where he’s enjoyed an award-winning career as a vocalist and radio personality.

The Legendary Beyons
Possibly the longest running vocal group on the West Coast, The Beyons have been crooning in unison
since 1968. Members of the group have performed with Lyle Lovett, Michael McDonald, and the Oregon
Symphony. Tonight’s program features songs from their unreleased 1977 session with the band, Pleasure.

Band Director, Tony Ozier
Tony Ozier brings a soulful, community-driven approach to our evening's program. A producer, singer, and
musician, Ozier blends funk and soul to create a unique, intergenerational sound. An impresario by nature,
Ozier's newest exhibition of soul promises to be historical in scope.

Album Release, The Gangsters
Tonight’s program sees the release of The Gangsters long lost LP from the early 1970s. A critical piece of
Albina soul music history, the album is the earliest recorded output from local Grammy winner, Thara
Memory. It features Albina musicians that would go on to play with the Jazz Crusaders and B.B. King.
Unreleased in its time, the LP’s liner notes contain rare archival photos and an oral history of the band.
