Death Valley Girls feels less like a band and more like a travelling caravan. At their core, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel channel Death Valley Girls’ modern spin on Fun House’s sonic exorcisms, early ZZ Top’s desert-blasted riffage, and Sabbath’s occult menace. Their relentless touring schedule means that the remainder of the group is rounded out by whichever like-minded compatriots can get in the van. On their third album Darkness Rains, bassist Alana Amram, drummer Laura Harris, and a rotating cast of guests like Shannon Lay, The Kid (Laura Kelsey), and members of The Make Up, The Shivas, and Moaning help elevate the band from their rogue beginnings to a communal ritualistic musical force. On the surface level, Death Valley Girls churn out the hypercharged, in the red, scuzzy rock every generation yearns for, but there is a more subversive force percolating beneath the surface that imbues the band with an exhilarating cosmic energy.

NOVEMBER 10TH, 2019
12 PM TO 6 PM at Polaris Hall

Attention Portland musicians, producers, home recordists, aspiring inventors, innovators, gear heads, synth nerds, drum fanatics, shoegazers, head bangers, and audiophiles! Come to the first event that celebrates the intersection of artistry, technology, and our city of music. Come and experience it as you meet the makers, try out and buy the gear and instruments.

Portland is an unsung, multi-million dollar hotbed of music manufacturing innovation, variety and quality.   Portland is the only metro of its size that can produce a complete musical equipment backline, end to end with the highest quality hand-built gear and instruments.  Some Portland-area brands are internationally respected and unique, others are new innovators who keep pushing the envelope in entirely new ways.  They all chose to do it in Portland, a city that celebrates iconoclasts and rule breakers. This event celebrates these innovators and seeks to validate and promote the vibrancy of the music manufacturing sector in our city.

BUSHWICK BILL: GETO BOY

SERIES: SONIC CINEMA

Director Greg Roman in attendance! A tribute to Bushwick Bill (1966-2019).

Censorship couldn't silence him, size couldn't limit him, and a bullet couldn't slow him down. BUSHWICK BILL: GETO BOY is a raw, cinematic documentary chronicling the life of one of the most notorious gangster rappers of all time.

He stood 4' 2" tall, had one eye, and was an integral part of the The Geto Boys' seminal album "We Can't Be Stopped," and their hit songs "My Mind Playing Tricks On Me" and "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster." As a character study, the film reveals a more mature Richard Shaw (aka Bushwick Bill) reflecting on his highly controversial life, his rise to cult stardom, and the exploitation at the hands of record companies that left him broke, homeless, and even suicidal.

Take a once-in-a-lifetime journey as Bill recounts his most memorable triumphs and failures, both public and private. This film has taken on new meaning with the recent and untimely passing of Bushwick Bill.

Sponsored by XRAY FM, Music Millennium and Lagunitas.

Additional Info:
In the heady days of the early 1990s, a wave of intrepid young bands made some unexpected connections between their post-punk approach to music, the exultant electronic reverberations from the early days of Acid House and the sonic sculptures crafted by classic producers like Phil Spector. As these sounds coalesced, Spector's vaunted "Wall Of Sound" would be a handy touchstone for the immersive latticework of distortion and melody that would be off-handedly labeled later as "Shoegaze".Even amongst a quasi-movement as loosely defined and musically divergent as this, Seefeel emerged as the black sheep. Conceived by Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock, Seefeel immediately amalgamated electronics in ways most of their peers in traditional bands would never dream of, these sounds fused deeply with guitar, drums and bass into urgent melodic waves that on early releases like Quique and Succour oscillated between hopefulness, introspection and downright menace. As Warp co-founder Steve Beckett says, "Seefeel were the first band that Warp signed who had guitars - they were brave to sign to us because they became the 'older siblings' in the family and took all the flak by breaking the unwritten rules of an (up until then) purely dance label. After 1995's 'Succour' they stopped performing live, but we always kept in touch and then for the first Warp20 show in Paris we asked if they would play."The immediate result of their live reformation in Paris was the single "Faults", the band's ranks now including bassist Shigeru Ishihara and former Boredoms drummer Iida Kazuhisa (aka E-Da). Their first release since 1996's (CH-VOX), "Faults" proved to be a clear and welcome progression for a group that had never been predictable. Drawing on everything from gamelan and krautrock to the fringes of underground bass music, Seefeel's new material has been met with a resounding "welcome back" and an instant affinity with new peers such as Gang Gang Dance, HEALTH, Battles and Salem.

THE CORPORATE COUP D’ÉTAT
(A Q&A will follow the screening with the movie’s coproducer Jeff Cohen.)

Hollywood Reporter calls it: “A horror film of the most realistic kind."

The movie examines how we “arrived at Trump.” It travels to the “sacrifice zones” of Camden NJ and Youngstown OH to reveal how corporations have hijacked US democracy to the detriment of most citizens. Featured analysts include Chris Hedges, Cornel West, Sarah Jaffe and John Ralston Saul. The film depicts Trump as a horrific symptom of the disease called “corporatism” and features interviews with former union workers in Ohio who’d voted for Obama and Bernie Sanders . . . and then flipped to Trump.

From The Hollywood Reporter review: "Among the more powerful segments are an interview with a homeless woman who's pitched a tent near a scrapyard and shares what little she has with others in her predicament, and a worker wandering through a foreclosed house still filled with the possessions of its former occupants, including its owner who left a suicide note and hung himself in the garage. It's those human faces of income inequality that give ‘The Corporate Coup d’État’ its greatest emotional heft."

JEFF COHEN founded the media watch group FAIR in 1986, and cofounded the online activist group RootsAction.org in 2011. He has coproduced several documentaries, including “All Governments Lie” and “The Brainwashing of My Dad.” Cohen is a former TV commentator and author of “Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media.”

Katherine Paul is Black Belt Eagle Scout. Released in September of 2018, Mother of My Children was the debut album from Black Belt Eagle Scout, the recording project of Katherine Paul. Heralded as a favorite new musician of 2018 by the likes of NPR Music, Stereogum, and Paste, the album was also named as a “Best Rock Album of 2018” by Pitchfork, and garnered further end-of-year praise from FADER, Under The Radar and more.

Arriving just a year after that debut record, At the Party With My Brown Friends is a brand new full-length recording from Black Belt Eagle Scout. Where that first record was a snapshot of loss and landscape and of KP’s standing as a radical indigenous queer feminist, this new chapter finds its power in love, desire and friendship.

At the Party With My Brown Friends is a profound and understated forward step. The squalling guitar anthems that shaped its predecessor are replaced by delicate vocals and soft keys, sentiments spoken and unspoken, presenting something shadowy and unsettling; a stirring of the waters.

The end result presents a captivating about-face that redefines KP’s beautifully singular artistic vision.

Saturday October 19, 8 to 10 pm, no cover charge: Lovecraft at the Lovecraft. Lovecraftian readings will start the show, (horror related, with a Weird Tales tinge), from a number of well known writers of the macabre in the Portland area. John Shirley--Bram Stoker Award winner, popular author, songwriter for the Blue Oyster Cult--and other writers, including poetry-award winner Adam Bolivar, Nathan Carson of Witch Mountain, Wendy N Wagner, Sarah Walker, Cody Goodfellow, will be doing short readings of weird-tales-style poetry and prose, followed by a ten minute macabre marionette show, Molly Craftwell and the Devil, the event topped off by John SHirley and the Screaming Geezers (Black OCtober records artists and Pacific NW punk/alt stars) playing dark hard rock.
