Parquet Courts' thought-provoking rock is dancing to a new tune. Sympathy For Life finds the Brooklyn band at both their most instinctive and electronic, spinning their bewitching, psychedelic storytelling into fresh territory, yet maintaining their unique identity.

Built largely from improvised jams, inspired by New York clubs, Primal Scream and Pink Floyd and produced in league with Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Hot Chip, David Byrne), Sympathy For Life was always destined to be dancey. Unlike its globally adored predecessor, 2018's Wide Awake! - a Top 30 hit here and an album of the year everywhere from Spin and The Skinny to NME and Australia's Double J - the focus fell on grooves rather than rhythm.

Goon’s latest EP Paint By Numbers, Vol. 1 expands the band’s sound immensely, bringing it in a lush, freer direction, hinting at wilder things to come. Paint by Numbers 1 is the first of two EPs, done in a similar manner to founder Kenny Becker’s early Bandcamp days. Forgoing a traditional studio, Becker recorded Paint by Numbers 1 entirely at his apartment and the band’s rehearsal space, alternating between a used four track tape recorder and plugging straight into his computer interface. The songs were recorded quickly, capturing the urgency and energy with which they were written. Becker compares the songs to “sculptures or collages,” but “no less significant” to him.

Caleb Nichols is a queer writer and musician from San Luis Obispo, CA. Since 2005, Caleb's played guitar, bass, and sang in bands as disparate as DIY folk-punks the Bloody Heads, mid-2000's Pitchfork buzz band Port O'Brien, and Rogue Wave side project Release the Sunbird, not to mention his own projects, Grand Lake, CHURCHES and Soft People.

The Bobby Lees come to the historic Mission Theater alongside the Macks and Portland’s own The Upkeeps.
The Bobby Lees are a young, Garage Rock band out of Woodstock NY. Audiotox UK said “Their raw and unapologetic energy promises to make you feel alive!” Find them and see for yourself.

Disillusioned with the current music scene, The Upkeeps set out to shake up the world with their own brand of Rock n' roll infused Powerpop! With dedication and their undying love for writing and creating the new age of modern day hits, The Upkeeps will sure not disappoint!

Produced and put to tape in Denver by Nate Cook and The Yawpers, "Rabbit" adds an entire new spectrum to The Macks’ sound. And despite the nature of the record’s inception, the feelings of frustration, apathy, and hopefulness should resonate and fuel the shows as the world opens up for live music again. With a fresh lineup that’s delivering the most creative music for the band to date, The Macks are coming at music from a new angle.

Hailed as "musical explorers" by Rolling Stone, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong first took flight roughly a decade ago at the University of Maryland, and the pysch-funk trailblazers have since gone on to play more than a thousand shows across 44 states. In just the past two years alone, the band has co-billed at Red Rocks, played halftime at Madison Square Garden, performed on Adult Swim's FishCenter Live, celebrated the tenth anniversary of their beloved music festival, Domefest, and even earned their first headlining arena show. The Baltimore quartet's latest album, ‘Presto,' is their most sophisticated and joyful collection to date, drawing on everything from funk to rock to electronic music as it builds off the group's unparalleled live energy and hits new heights of emotional and technical maturity. At a time when America seems to grow more divided by the day, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong still believes in the power of music to bring people together, and ‘Presto' is a big, bold album all about celebrating the present and sharing it with the ones we love most.

Aaron Space & his Terrestrial Underlings is the musical moniker of composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Elihu Knowles. Based in Berkeley, CA, Knowles's background as a jazz drummer deeply influences his soulful and experimental tunes. His work has often been compared to a variety of artists including Jon Bap, Sun Ra, Radiohead, King Krule, Standing on the Corner, and Rufus Wainwright.

Now, following a brief sojourn playing traditional jazz in Berlin, Germany, Knowles has returned to the states for another west coast tour. With a smaller band, he hopes to shed light on a different aspect of Aaron Space's musical universe, emphasizing its improvisatory elements to create a more captivating and continually evolving performance. He has begun production on his second full length studio album, which is expected to be completed around the end of the year.

Robert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm with a career that bridges musical and artistic genres. To date, he boasts 4 Grammy wins and 9 nominations across 8 categories, and an Emmy Award for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary “13th” with Common and Karriem Riggins. His work and accolades bridge all aspects of the music business, from live touring to film scoring, composing and producing.

Evolution is his hallmark. Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. The album won him the Grammy for best R&B album and established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists; notably playing keys throughout Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.

The ongoing Black Radio series has since become Glasper’s calling card, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community: from Mos Def and Bilal, to legends including Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu.

Glasper’s eternal pursuit to further his sound has been consistent in challenging and transforming his creative horizons across the board. Whether producing a remix album with Kaytranda or as a bandleader, he consistently defies the limits of the genre. This is evident in a portfolio that ranges from his acoustic jazz trio; which simultaneously defies and elevates the traditional idiom by uniting it effortlessly with electronics from visionary DJ Jahi Sundance, to August Greene; a collaboration with Common + Karriem Riggins, to R+R=Now a supergroup at the crossroads of hip-hop and Jazz.

In the last two years alone Glasper has seen a staggering diversity of success. He dropped Fuck Yo Feelings; a star-studded mixtape; with features from YBN Cordae to Herbie Hancock to Yebba. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B album in the recent 2021 awards.  He created an original score for the Emmy Nominated doc The Apollo and the feature film The Photograph starring Issa Rae.

He led a legendary residency at the Blue Note NYC with 56 sold-out shows in 27 days which saw everyone from Dave Chappelle to Tiffany Haddish, Chadwick Boseman, Q-Tip, Anderson.Paak and Angela Davis join him on and off stage. And, alongside long-time collaborator, co-producer, and creative partner Terrace Martin, he formed another dream team supergroup Dinner Party featuring Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder.

In August of 2020, Robert released ‘Better Than Imagined’ which won the Grammy for Best R&B song in 2021; the first taste of his hotly anticipated forthcoming Black Radio 3 albumFeaturing H.E.R and Meshell Ndegeocello, the song advocates for Black love and the power, and responsibility, we have to improve our world; again demonstrating that, above all, Glasper is an artist at the heart of a moment – and a movement – to champion Black music, Black people, and the possibility of a better future. The hip-hop-head-nod ballad is a dedication to just that: the beauty and brilliance of a heritage that is as much Kendrick as it is Coltrane, and which seeks to empower and uplift with every offering.

In his own words:
“Black lives matter and so does black love; no one wants a life without love, but we have generations of people in our community who haven’t had the tools to actually be in healthy relationships. It seems like people are finally ready to open their eyes to systemic racism in this country, and if we’re going to talk about it, we have to also talk about how it affects our relationships — how we communicate, how we see ourselves, how we treat each other. It’s not always good, even though maybe it could be.”

Next up for Glasper is the long-awaited release of Black Radio vol. 3, with this very special 2022 Biamp PDX JAZZ FESTIVAL appearance a showcase of those new tunes along with his now classic catalog.

TAHIRAH MEMORY
Portland native, singer, songwriter Tahirah Memory, raised by a willful, loving and resourceful mother, and shaped at an early age by the vibration and melodic hands of her jazz trumpeter father, asserted her love for music extremely early in her childhood. Tahirah’s sound, steeped in jazz, soul and R&B is unlike any other, sounding distinctly like her personal truth.

The Weather Station

Ignorance, the forthcoming album by The Weather Station, begins enigmatically; a hissing hi hat, a stuttering drum beat. A full minute passes before the entry of Tamara Lindeman’s voice, gentle, conversational, intoning; “I never believed in the robber”. A jagged music builds, with stabbing strings, saxophone, and several layers of percussion, and the song undulates through five minutes of growing tension, seesawing between just two chords. Once again, Toronto songwriter Tamara Lindeman has remade what The Weather Station sounds like; once again, she has used the occasion of a new record to create a new sonic landscape, tailor-made to express an emotional idea. Ignorance, Lindeman’s debut for Mississippi label Fat Possum Records, is sensuous, ravishing, as hi fi a record as Lindeman has ever made, breaking into pure pop at moments, at others a dense wilderness of notes; a deeply rhythmic, deeply painful record that feels more urgent, more clear than her work ever has.
