Universally recognized as one of the most exciting singers remaining from the original soul era, 82 year-old Ural Thomas and his band The Pain just released their third LP "Dancing Dimensions." Thomas initially made his name in the 1960s with stone cold soul classic releases like "Pain Is The Name of Your Game," "Can You Dig It," "Deep Soul," and his 1964 recording debut with The Monterays "Push - Em Up." After a musical journey that commenced in his native Portland, Oregon, and led to Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and New York, sharing stages with everyone from James Brown to Stevie Wonder to Otis Redding to Etta James, Thomas became disillusioned with the music business and returned home to the city of roses at the end of the decade - where he continues to reign as Portland's uncontested Soul Brother Number One.
Hillstomp sounds like a boom box blasting from a shopping cart. Two madmen have strapped an engine to the cart and it’s too big and running too hot. They've got a banjo and a megaphone, a washboard and a kick drum. They've stocked the cart with guitars, buckets, car parts, and microphones and they are hurtling towards a blown out bridge while the bad front wheel flaps manically. The fools think they can jump the bridge and land safely on the other side. They are very wrong but no one has told them because...well, they just seem so happy. And there you are, bouncing alongside them and deep down you hope they make it. Hillstomp is folk music in its purest form – from loud and gritty, to intricate and poignant, and most importantly, always heartfelt and true.

The Get Down Funk Collective is an improvisational music series with a revolving artist roster busting offthe chains of musical conformity. Artist collaboration with no boundaries in the spirit of the jam is the
premise of this series. Don’t expect to see the exact same band twice.
For Episode #1 and the launch of this series, we have assembled some of Portland’s funkiest
heavyweights with a touch of jam.
Farnell Newton – Trumpet
A local funk master trumpeter/producer that toured with Grammy award winner Jill Scott, as well aslegendary bassist Bootsy Collins. Farnell has graced the stage with Stevie Wonder, Skerik, Lettuce,
Galactic and The Portland Cello Project.
Tyrone Hendrix – drums
He is a drummer, a composer, and a producer. Tyrone has laid down the rhythm for Prince, StevieWonder, Allen Stone blending elements of funk, jazz and hip hop.
Lyle Divinsky – vocals
From NYC subway performances to becoming the front man and vocalist for Colorado funk powerhouse The Motet, Lyle has performed on some of America’s most iconic stages to include Red Rocks, MSG and
Tipitina’s.
Galen Clark – keys
Keyboardist, songwriter and producer Galen Clark leads Portland based bands Outer Orbit and TrioSubtonic, and also tours nationally with Sleater-Kinney and Anna Tivel.
Tye North – bass
Portland raised and the original bass player from Leftover Salmon, Tye is fresh off a tour with KellerWilliams and Dave Watts from The Motet. Tye has toured with super group Comotion, and played withlocal favorites Porterhouse, grammy nominated Danny Barnes and Ducky Pig. Tye was also a member of
the infamous Zambiland Orchestra and has participated in several Everyone Orchestra gigs.
Kyle Molitor – Trombone
Hailing from Tigard, Oregon, Kyle was a touring member of The Bootsy Collins Rubber Band. Playing innumerous collaborations with Farnell Newton. Kyle has also played with Joshua Redman, Kelly Finneganfrom The Monophonics and Wynton Marsalis.
Tate Peterson – guitar
Originally from the bay area, Tate began his music career in Eugene founding experimental jazz rockband, Savitri. After relocating to Portland he has played professionally with his blues/R&B power trio,The Resolectrics, as well as Big E & The Stomp, Anita Lee & the Handsome Three and Black Dogs of
Skyline.

"A Radio Christmas Carol" is our re-imagined radio adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. First published in December 1834 and never out of print since, the novel is no doubt familiar. Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser cold of heart and spirit, is tranformed by Ghosts of Christmas into a kind, generous, and compassionate man. He gives Bob Cratchit a raise and becomes a second father to Tiny Tim. The point: humanity outweighs riches, and brings redemption.
Re-Imagined Radio first offered "A Radio Christmas Carol" in 2013. Every year since we've offered some iteration of this classic story. We like to think it has become a community tradition, bringing joy and festivities to the seasonal holidays. In 2020, pandemic restrictions prevented live performances. This year we are pleased to welcome back The Willamette Radio Workshop, directed by Sam A. Mowry, and The Holly Jolly Choir, directed by Bennett Bailey, for a live performance in Vancouver's historic Kiggins Theatre. Yes, the holiday magic returns.

Rapper and producer the Grouch has been a valued underground hip-hop figure since he co-founded Living Legends, a loose collective of MCs and DJs from the Bay Area, Japan, and Europe. The crew set themselves apart from the vast majority of their fellow West Coast rap artists by favoring clear-eyed raps about everyday issues. They coupled this with a grassroots approach to the music business, choosing to self-release and market their prodigious output. The Grouch's extensive work as a solo artist and co-headliner, from Don't Talk to Me (1995), his debut, through Thees Handz (2019), a collaboration with Murs, has only reinforced the reputation he started building in the first half of the '90s.
Eligh, a self-described “genre-breaking, obsessive bass fiend” has continued to sustain himself as a salient figure for over fifteen years within the increasingly fickle and rapidly revolving world of hip-hop. The Los Angeles native has maintained his respected status by fearlessly veering from a traditional trajectory which is often limited to beats and rhymes. Instead, Eligh has chosen to fabricate projects that incorporate the gritty sounds of the UK dub scene, the unorthodox styling of indie rock, the lush guitars and honesty of folk music, and the complexity of jazz, all without losing the listener in a musically esoteric composition.

TOC will be celebrating the “cold” full moon with some amazing artists in December.
Haley Heynderickx is the first performance of the night. The Portland artist has built a solid fan base around the country with serene folk tunes like The Bug Collector and Oom Sha La La. Her debut album, I Need to Start a Garden, popped up on several year-end album lists (Paste, Uproxx and more) and led to her own NPR Tiny Desk Concert. After spending the fall touring with Lucy Dacus, Heynderickx returns to Portland at the historic Old Church Concert Hall ahead of a period of “rest and recording.”
New York Avant-Garde legend Robin Holcomb finishes the evening with a set blending jazz, classical, folk music and much more. Her music has been described by the New York Times as “elegantly simple as a Shaker quilt, and no less beautiful.” It’s an honor to welcome her to the TOC stage.

The 80s Alternative legends have returned to Portland!
In October 2011, a reconstructed Music Of Quality And Distinction concert at the Roundhouse on night one (featuring original artists from the projects such as Sandie Shaw, and new talent such as Polly Scattergood) would be followed on the second by a dramatic reconstruction of their biggest commercial success, The Luxury Gap.
The Luxury Gap has never been more relevant. Written during the height of Thatcherism by three Left-leaning young men against a backdrop of over 3 million unemployed the parallels with the Austerity Britain of today are obvious. Today with a Millionaire cabinet, bankers' bonuses, yet with once again three million unemployed and doom and depression everywhere, Heaven 17's sly, post-modern critique of modern society has never sounded so resonant, nor been so necessary.

Lose Yr Mind Fest is pleased to announce the full line up for the 8th annual independent music festival celebrating some of the best artists in rock, psychedelic, post-punk and garage.
This year’s primarily local lineup of 23 bands and two music showcases will take place September 2-3, 2022 across four venues in Portland’s Central Eastside neighborhood, with a free and open to the public wrap party on September 4.
Along with a majority of female fronted bands, this year’s festival will emphasize BIPOC and LGBTQ+ representation, making it the most diverse Lose Yr Mind Fest to-date.
Fueled by the nostalgia of the 90’s, this year’s lineup dives into the past to create a new blend of fresh and eclectic post-punk sounds. Highlights at Lose Yr Mind Fest include various Portland-based hometown stars such as ‘sad rock’ Soft Kill, psychedelic-pop band The Dandy Warhols, and indie-folk MAITA, whose sophomore record I Just Want to Be Wild for You dropped in February. While the mix of artists at Lose Yr Mind Fest includes local favorites, Psychic Bloom’s soulful garage rock from Tehran and Orquestra Pacifico Tropical’s Colombian cumbia rhythms show that the festival sounds go beyond borders and genres.

Peter Donovan is an astute musical storyteller. His perceptive songs span genres and feature narratives based on both real-life and fictitious characters, written with a contemplative heart. After finding success and a dedicated fanbase with Seattle’s All The Real Girls and his side project The Rose Petals (alongside Elijah Ocean), Donovan returns in 2022 with his first proper solo album, This Better Be Good.
The son of an acting coach and a therapist, Kite seems to have it in his DNA to blend the dramatic and analytic. Each musical wave crest and fall mirrors a turn in the story. Instruments rest for minutes before suddenly emerging. Emotions and motifs sustain and then drop into oblivion. The tone switches suddenly from accusation to epiphany. It is the sound of someone going through it.

Veteran songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Coykendall has been amazingly prolific over the last three decades or so. Currently most well known for his duties as a sideman, producer, and recordist via his work with M Ward, Blitzen Trapper, She & Him, Annalisa Tornfelt, & Tin Hat Trio, to name a few, Coykendall has been making his own unique outsider records since the mid ’80s.

Takénobu is a live-looping cinematic folk string duo performing original songs with vocal harmonies and ethereal instrumentals.
Cellist Nick Ogawa has been a touring member of Kishi Bashi and is a composer for NPR's Invisibilia, Netflix's Last Chance U, and the Netflix documentary 42 Grams by Jack Newell about michelin star chef Jake Bickelhaupt.
Kathryn Koch holds a Masters degree in Violin Performance and plays regularly with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, and Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. She has toured with the Trans Siberian Orchestra and Tiny Rhymes, and appears on many film and video game soundtracks.

On his latest album, (watch my moves), Vile pulls his talents as a singer, songwrit-er, multi-instrumentalist, and producer in unexpected directions—and the result is a vibrant, yet meditative album propelled by Vile’s laid-back charm and curious spirit. Every lyric has been chiseled down into an aphorism, every bloom of distorted guitar or murmuring synth helping create that “fried” pop. “It’s about songwriting. It’s about lyrics. It’s about being the master of all domains in the music,” he says of his ninth album and first in partnership with a major label, Verve Records.

His mind was always swirling, though, puzzling out pointillistic lyrics, dreaming up spit-shined choruses, and checking in on other dimensions. “My favorite pastime these days is sitting drinking coffee in the morning post-breakfast by the window, reading and listening to Sun Ra, sun shining through the forest trees,” says Vile. “In that moment, it’s all the traveling I’ll ever need. This record encapsulates all that—letting two years roll by and staying in my zone, traveling all the while in my brain, at the piano or in my guitar.”
