April 3, 2019 (Portland, OR): In a special collaboration with Portland Taiko, Fear No Music looks beyond borders with curiosity and respect, highlighting Japan’s outsized influence on Western culture, and thus the diverse fabric of our own neighborhoods.
Japanarama: The Ongoing Influence of Japanese Culture
Monday, May 6 at 7:30pm
The Old Church Concert Hall in Downtown Portland
Tickets available at fearnomusic.org
With this dynamic collaboration, Fear No Music accentuates quintessential Japanese concepts such as “ma” (the space between), “wabi sabi” (the beauty of imperfection), “shibui” (simplicity or minimalism), and “ikigai” (a reason for being), which serve to contextualize Japanese culture and showcase its unique beauty. Japanese design and aesthetics are so prevalent in modern American society that many people are unaware of their overseas origins. However, the rich history that shaped their existence provides deeper insight and appreciation for the invaluable ways in which we reappropriate foreign culture as our own.
This concert program includes:
Stream for solo percussion, by Peruvian interdisciplinary composer, performer and improviser, Pauchi Sasaki
My Sleeve Is Wet With Tears for solo clarinet, by Barbara White
Netsuke: Six Miniatures for violin and piano, by Stephen Hartke (inspired by exquisite Japanese wood carvings on display at the LA County Museum of Art)
Sonata from the Other Shore for solo piano, by Wang Jie: “a cross-cultural handshake between current and former rival countries” Japan and China, and based on the Japanese folk song “Tanchame-Bushi”
Pacific Voices for taiko and violin, by Zachary Semke and Ann Ishimaru
Dango Jiro for flute, violin, cello, and taiko ensemble, by Kenji Bunch *
Winds of Change/Forest Festival for taiko and viola, by Kenny Endo

Acclaimed pop singer/producer Dan Vidmar, a.k.a. Shy Girls, will
release a new album, Bird on the Wing, in Spring of 2019 .
The album contains a palpable sense of Vidmar’s evolution towards
the carefree, a newfound buoyancy and optimism which pervades the
whole effort. The album is an enticing and uplifting mixture of lo-fi soul,
nerdy jam outs, minimalist grooves and a whole lot of chimes. It pulls from
a far-reaching and unexpected array of influences, with elements of Jaco
and Weather Report, dusty Dilla-esque drums, and noodling Garcia guitar
solos.

SKELETON CREW
By Dominique Morisseau
Directed by William (Bill) Earl Ray
September 2, 2018 – September 30, 2018
Morrison Stage
It's 2008, and one of the last auto plants in Detroit is dying on the vine. The factory workers that remain are living paycheck-to-paycheck but amidst the backbreaking work and brutally long shifts, they have somehow shaped themselves into a makeshift family. Faye, a factory lifer, is the glue that holds everything together. But with less than six months before she can retire with a full pension, Faye learns that management has a plan that could threaten her whole existence, leaving her torn between loyalty to her coworkers or her own survival. Heartbreakingly tense with moments of ethereal beauty, Skeleton Crew reveals the struggle to stay relevant in a society that constantly changes.
- Awards for Dominique Morisseau: 2016 OBIE Award (for Skeleton Crew)
- "A deeply moral and deeply American play, with a loving compassion for those trapped in a system that makes sins, spiritual or societal, and self-betrayal almost inevitable." -Ben Brantley, The New York Times
- "A deep vulnerable blend of frustration, conversation, and denial." -Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

Jeff Rosenstock was an anxious kid who grew into an anxious adult and has also made a bunch of music along the way with a bunch of bands, most notably Bomb the Music Industry! who apparently pioneered giving shit away for free on the internet - or at least got some of the credit for it.
I hope. I don't know, that's what I was going for at least.

Great Grandpa began in Seattle in 2014 when guitarist & vocalist Patrick Goodwin recruited bassist Carrie Miller, drummer Cam LaFlam, and vocalist Alex Menne to form a humble rock band. Inspired by the pop-sensible alternative rock of the 90's, and offset by a mutual love for noise and math rock, the group set forth to write and record their first EP.
During recording, guitarist Dylan Hanwright joined the group, solidifying the lineup. Great Grandpa began performing in the Seattle area in late 2014, frequenting the city's DIY venues. In March of 2015, their debut EP Can Opener was released on Broken World Media. The EP was met with considerable praise, and has been described as "warm, slightly off-kilter grunge pop", and "knotty, twisted, and warm rock music that's as melodically satisfying as it is, at times, confounding."
Great Grandpa began writing their debut LP soon after, and found themselves touring the western US and performing extensively in the Seattle area. Written in 2015 and 2016, Great Grandpa's debut LP Plastic Cough continues to explore the sonic territory visited in Can Opener, exhibiting infectious melodies across a range of backdrops, from quiet bedroom-pop to explosive, anthemic rock. Plastic Cough is out July 7th via Double Double Whammy.

Believe it or not, Hack Oregon doesn’t really do a lot of Hackathons. We form specialized teams to build software and open data stories on important themes in the public interest, while working and iterating incrementally over months to create a product.
The “Buildathon” is the one day where we open up our project teams for guest contributors that want to be part of the magic and build something amazing, but might not have the time to participate in our months-long project season.
What’s the goal?
The Buildathon is a production sprint to create data stories for the upcoming launch of our CIVIC Platform. We’ve laid the groundwork to do research, visualizations, and data storytelling quickly, and we need your help to bring our projects to the next level. Be prepared to make friends and be an instant part of our Hack Oregon family!
How can I get involved?
By joining our sprint, you’ll be placed with a team that needs extra hands on deck in your particular skill set. We’re working toward a big public Demo Day in June, where you can proudly present alongside your team.
Here’s a list of the technical and creative skills our teams are looking for:
Front End Developers with experience in React and Redux
Data Visualization experts
Cartographers
Geospatial analysts, engineers, and architects
Experienced Data Scientists with comfort in Python tools
Data Scientists with advanced Machine Learning skills
Database Architects and Programmers with experience in PostgreSQL
Developers with experience building APIs in Django
Documentarians
Experienced DevOps Engineers
Visual Designers
Illustrators
UI/UX
Graphic Designers
Photographers
Researchers (with interest in policy)
Domain experts in subject matter relating to this year’s themes
Sprint for a Healthy Internet
We're excited to join forces with Mozilla to bring our teamwork to their Global Hackathon Sprint. Mozilla is bringing together a global community of scientists, educators, artists, engineers, students and others to work on projects that make the internet a better place—from board games to promote online privacy to apps for sharing research data to coding languages for artists.
We'll have special opportunities to collaborate on our CIVIC Platform story collection, including technical and non-technical support at all skill levels.
There will be lots of food, caffeine, and camaraderie for the full two-day event.
No need to apply, you can RSVP and save your spot with us.
