ON SCREEN: The Elephant 6 Recording Co.

2022. Directed by C.B. Stockfleth. Runtime: 93 minutes. Not Rated.

The Elephant 6 Recording Co. shares the unique inside story of the collective creative evolution behind the sounds of 1990s psychedelic rock bands The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Apples in Stereo — the founding groups behind the Elephant 6 collective, as well as a host of other artists — with inspirational resonance for today’s music makers, and music lovers everywhere.

Around 1985, a group of Ruston, Louisiana area high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could lay their hands on. Moving to other small college towns including Denver, Colorado and Athens, Georgia, their musical coming of age coincided with the new consumer availability of old-school 4- and 8-track recording technology and cassette tapes. Sharing like-minded sensibilities, influenced by past sounds and psychedelia, and with little to distract them, their efforts to create whole new musical worlds became the bands The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples In Stereo and many more. While the collective grew to a natural breaking point, its founding members overcame obstacles and remained closely bonded, reuniting for tours and still collaborating today.

The Elephant 6 Recording Co. provides insight into this revolutionary era of popular independent music in America, the defiant DIY spirit in music making, and champions the integrity of an authentic quest for artistic expressiveness over the more mainstream image of being a “successful” musician in our fame-obsessed times.

ON STAGE: Ross Beach & The Minders

Ross Beach
Ross Beach is a songwriter, DJ, tech pro, and a co-founder and former president of the non-profit group PDX Pop Now! Hear him preview local concerts and spin strange, beautiful music on his XRAY show, Alive With Pleasure, Fridays from 2-3 p.m.

The Minders
The Minders are an Indie-Psych-Pop band based in Portland, Oregon. Formed in Denver, Colorado in 1996, the band is closely associated with The Elephant Six Collective.

Cathedral Park Dock & Beach (St. John's)

FREE // All Ages // More Info + Cleanup Photos

Human Access Project is throwing a Grand Opening Party to celebrate a new $900,000 dock at Cathedral Park and the removal of 150 tons of concrete from the river's edge by the community.

Featuring:
  • Music by Snack and Red Leathers (Funk / Soul)
  • Free swimming lessons from Black Swimming Initiative
  • Free kayak rentals from Mosquito Fleet
  • Life jacket giveaway
  • BBQ by JP
  • Community booths and more!
Schedule of Events:
  • 2-3:30pm Free Swimming Clinic by Black Swimming Initiative
  • 3:30-4pm Ribbon Cutting
  • 4-7pm Live Music
Human Access Project (HAP) feels a grand opening party is important to bring attention to how much the river edge of the beach has changed. This party is an invitation to St. Johns to celebrate the new dock and beach. HAP anticipates St. Johns, in time, will turn into a river recreation playground - very likely this summer. This party represents a milestone moment of this change for St. Johns, North Portland and the city as a whole.

Background:
Human Access Project has been working on improving the recreational value of Cathedral Park Beach since 2021.
In 2021 HAP recruited 100 volunteers to remove 25 tons of concrete and rubble from the North side of the Cathedral Park Beach.

In 2022 HAP received an American Rescue Plan grant of $300k. They negotiated with Portland Parks and Recreation to use this money to replace the Cathedral Park Dock. The total cost of the dock is $900k. HAP catalyzed the dock replacement. The dock will have swim ladders and will be elevated by pontoons to improve water circulation inside of the dock.
In 2023 HAP recruited 150 volunteers to remove 125 tons of concrete and rubble from the South side of the dock. They had divers come out to look for trash inside the dock. The result of removing the concrete on the south side of the dock is that there is a new South Beach at the park where people can hang out, walk their dogs etc.

HAP is actively working on pulling permits to remove derelict pilings from the beach which they hope to do this summer in September. They foresee continuing to be involved in upgrading and stewarding the river experience at Cathedral Park.
Interested in lending a hand as a volunteer? Please send an email to info@humanaccessproject.com.

THE EXPERIENCE

Join us for a 40th anniversary screening of the film Beat Street, presented by DJ Klyph and XRAY FM

ON SCREENBeat Street

1984. Directed by Stan Lathan. Runtime: 105 minutes. Rated PG.
Produced by Harry Belafonte, Hollywood’s first in-depth exploration of hip-hop culture centers on teens in the Bronx, the epicenter of the blooming hip-hop community, finding their way. Littered with cameos from hip-hop greats, the film captures the pulse of a community before their culture hit the mainstream. With Rae Dawn Chong, Guy Davis, Mary Alice, and Duane Jones.

OFF SCREEN: No Requests DJs Klyph & Ambush

DJ Klyph is a veteran of terrestrial radio in Portland, Oregon, building a brand that has promoted the local music scene through FM broadcast [The Numberz FM & XRAY FM], podcasts [Klyph Notes], and live events [No Requests & Mic Check PDX].

As a selector, he leans heavily towards lyrical content and classic boom bap due in great part to his early years in the Northeastern corner of the US. After spending prominent years in the South, he relocated to the Northwest and has become a fixture in the local scene.

“The Rhythm” radio show on The Numberz FM allows Klyph to continue the mission of bringing great content to listeners, highlighting music you won’t hear anywhere else in the city. “Welcome to the Neighborhood” on XRAY FM provides a platform for artists from within the region and national artists as well. The “Klyph Notes” podcast brings long form interviews, diving into the stories behind the art. Klyph works to create platforms representing the underrepresented from the Northwest and worldwide.

Being a collector of music since the age of 14, Ambush has always had a devout interest in making people dance. Starting out by rocking high school and basement parties, Ambush was the one showing up with the “pause tape” cassette mixes and was always amazed and excited to see audiences react to his selections. Soon thereafter, Ambush acquired his first set of turntables, and started getting booked for parties; the rest is history. Ambush’s love for music and DJ’ing has taken him all over. With over 26 years of experience in nightclubs, concerts, festivals, retail locations, and weddings coupled with a rich knowledge of music Ambush is the perfect DJ for any occasion.

Travvy was born in Portland, Oregon the year of 1994. In middle school Travvy's neighbor was a DJ who helped him make a mix CD at just 11 years old. One year later, Travvy's father passed away. This put everything to a stop and Travvy turned to alcohol. Reaching rock bottom he made the choice to move to Wisconsin, where he found a support system that helped him get sober. Throughout his addiction, he claims music saved his life. Artists such as; Atmosphere, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Outkast, among others shaped his music and helped him process emotions. At age 15 Travvy was kicked out of his house by his mother's 2 month boyfriend at the time, who is now her husband. He is a Proud Boy against everything Travvy stands for. Travvy is biracial and of the LGBTQ community and has felt unsafe around his mother and her husband. In the song Journal Entry #1 you'll hear him dig deep by sampling his old beat and song, along with his new perspective. He samples his mother's actual husband, and actual voicemails from his mother. Travvy is now 4 years alcohol free and counting. He has found a love for astrology and provides private readings as well. Travvy's music sounds a lot like artists such as; Frank Ocean , Kanye West , Londrelle , Lavva , Lizzy Jeff , 6LACK , WILLOW , J. Cole among so many others! You'll also find sprinkles of affirmations throughout the songs to help better your mind, body, and soul.

Born in Beirut in 1980, Ibrahim Maalouf is currently the most popular instrumentalist in the French music scene and one of the most recognized internationally. Nominated for the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in 2023, his genre-crossing work has led him to fill Istanbul's Volkswagen Arena, sell out the Lincoln Jazz Center in New York,or perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and travel to over 40 countries around the world. In 2016, he became the first jazz musician in history to fill France's largest concert hall, the Paris Bercy Arena, selling out 8 months in advance for a historic show. "The virtuoso" according to The New York Times, has received 2 "Victoires du Jazz", 2 "Victoires de la Musique" (making him the first and only instrumentalist to beawarded in the history of this ceremony), an "Echo Jazz" in Germany, a "César for Best Film Music", a "Prix Lumières" for Best Film Music, as well as honorary awards of Knight of the Order of Merit and Knight of Arts and Letters.

As a teenager, Ibrahim was already winning major international classical music competitions and starting a solo career. In the 2000s, he became essential in pop, jazz as well as the "World" music scene. Sting, Salif Keita, Amadou & Mariam, Tryo, Matthieu Chédid, Lhasa de Sela, and many artists of very diverse styles call on him. Between 2007 and 2023, Ibrahim produced, composed, arranged, and directed more than 20 albums for himself and other artists. He also composed more than 10 symphonic pieces and twenty movie scor

In 2017, Quincy Jones Productions became his representative in the United States, and his North American career took off anew. The American Media’s reviews of his album "Queen of Sheba” - in a duet with the Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo - are rapturous. "The most interesting album of the year" according to the legendary magazine Spin, "Without a doubt one of the most important world music albums of the year" according to Glide Magazine, another leading American music magazine. In 2022, Ibrahim composed the soundtrack for "Reste un peu" by Gad Elmaleh. One of the greatest French directors, Claude Lelouch, offered him to compose the music for his 51st feature film. Meanwhile, Ibrahim has never stopped expressing his love for the trumpet and improvisation.

In 2022, he relaunched after 17 years of absence, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Maurice André International Trumpet Competition, thus putting the name of the man who was his father's teacher and a true mentor, at the center of French cultural media interest.

In 2021, Ibrahim released a book entitled "Petite philosophie de l'improvisation" and initiated "Improbox", aradio program on TSF Jazz that highlights the importance and place of improvisation in all professions. He sees himself as an activist for the reintegration of improvisation into musical learning as well as national education. Ibrahim Maalouf is an artist who is committed. He was present alongside Sting during the reopening of The Bataclan, as well as the funeral of Tignous, one of the cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo, and composed a tribute songin tribute to the victims of the 2015 attacks, sung by Louane, written by his uncle Amin Maalouf, and performed with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

On July 15, 2021, Ibrahim performed a personalized version of La Marseillaise in front of 6 million viewers and 500,000 people gathered on the Champs de Mars. He also stays close to his country of origin, Lebanon. In 2020, he organized a major fundraising concert at the Olympia, broadcasted on France 2 and all Lebanese television channels to help Lebanon after the explosion at the port of Beirut. Donations exceeded 2 million euros.

Celebrate 10 YEARS of XRAY with us in an all-out Birthday Bash with some certified rock stars, a whole lot of the XRAY DJs you know and love, and an exciting announcement you'll just have to be there to see.

We haven't held an official birthday event since Year 5 (2019) for...perhaps obvious reasons. In the past, these have usually sold out so get your tickets early!

Your hosts for the night will be the incomparable Arthur Bradford AND B. Frayn Masters!!!

The Minus 5

...is a rock/folk/pop collective captained by Scott McCaughey (see: “Scott McCaughey” c/o “The Internet”, for further reliable information), with Peter Buck often aboard as navigation officer. By design from its inception, the line-up for recordings and live appearances is completely fluid, dependent on musician availability, whim, and wind direction. Collaborators regularly feature friends from R.E.M. (as it once were), Wilco, Decemberists, Posies, and literally hundreds and hundreds of other recalcitrant comrade combos.  Everyone gives their all, and no one need be counted on.

Abronia

A lot of bands who fly the psych banner these days have a minimalist view of the music, and choose a sort of post-shoegaze lassitude to present their “vision.” This can be astoundingly great, of course, but it also fails to address the central gobble-crazed nature of true psychedelia. Many of history’s greatest psych outfits were hewn from bizarre hybrids of disparate parts. Frankenstein monsters in search of sacred ecstasy. One gets the same vibe off of Abronia. Totally unexpected bits pop up amidst their rhapsodic jamming, conjuring shards of memory as disparate as Relf-era Renaissance, Joseph Byrd’s United States of America, and even (at least in spots) real early Siouxsie. These are just a few examples of how wide Abronia cast their net. Their instrumental brunt moves from neo-prog to folk rock to thunderheads cast in the same mold as the Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s (I shit you not!).

Arthur Bradford (Co-MC)

Arthur Bradford is best known, at XRAY and only at XRAY, for hosting Sex, Drugs, & Basketball on Thursday nights. But he's best known everywhere else as a prolific and award-winning author and documentary filmmaker (bet you weren't expecting an Emmy nominee to be the same person that hosts a show where only topics about sex, drugs, or basketball are allowed!). His stories have been heard on The Moth Radio Hour, This American Life, and BackfencePDX. You may have seen some of his films--they're pretty popular--like How's Your News? or 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park.

B. Frayn Masters (Co-MC)

Frayn is prolific when it comes to telling stories of all kinds, and XRAY has been proud to call her a friend of the station in several capacities throughout our time on the air. Currently, her biggest project is leading the charge at BackfencePDX. Since 2008, series creator, artistic director, and host Frayn Masters along with Backfence story producers Mindy Nettifee, Brian S. Ellis, and Chris Williams have been curating powerful and engaging story shows for the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The most exciting part of a storytelling show is we get to mix things up and put wildly different kinds of people together on the same night in a way that will never happen again. A funeral director on stage with author of Wild Cheryl Strayed, a high school science teacher with Parenthood's Joy Bryant, a poker player taking wild chances with Bridesmaid's Wendi McLendon-Covey, a pet psychic with Superstore's Colton Dunn, and a blood spatter expert with Shrill author Lindy West.

HOOVERIII

Time after time, we all talk about ... well, time - often in aphorisms and cliches. X is "a waste of time," while Y is "time well spent." We are all apt to lose track of time but, perhaps in equal measure, we have plenty of time on our hands. We think we have all the time in the world -- until we remember that time flies, after which our time runs out and we're dead (for a long time).

Since 2020, internal clocks have had to be readjusted with the pace of life ebbing and flowing. For Los Angeles psych-rock sextet Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") that adjustment seeped its way into their songwriting and ultimately their forthcoming album, A Round of Applause.

The record cherrypicks from an array of genres - pop, girl-group ditties, synth-ish keyboards and funk -but the end result is a cohesive long-player with songs that revolve around the Spanish Inquisition ("Stone Man"); or follow "the legendary Peruvians who run long distances in the Andes Mountains ("The Runner"). "I let my imagination run wild," Hoover said. Elsewhere on A Round of Applause, the Hooveriii frontman finally recorded a song, "The Pearl," that he wrote in 2017. "It sounds like a Harry Nilsson jingle like to me, a fantasy song," he continued. "It's more like a nursery rhyme than a song with an important message. You know, it's just like keeping things fun. ... Nilsson didn't take everything so fucking seriously. We want to avoid that self-seriousness. We're a bunch of goofy musicians."
