RONTOMS
8:30pm Sunday, February 8, 2015
LOCATION: Rontoms

ADDRESS: 600 E Burnside St.

"[NOSTALGIC POP] Reminiscent of moody, early 2000s Northwest pop and stuff that would appear on the soundtrack for The O.C., Portland’s Pony Village is nothing if not sentimental—see everything from the band’s name (taken from a dilapidated mall in Bend, where frontman Ryan Barber grew up) to its lyrical content to Barber's wispy, Ben Gibbard-esque croon. Although the group is sonically wistful, its blending of country twang with dreamy riffs differentiates it from the ghosts of alt-pop past."

For the second year running, RACC is proud to bring the whole PDX music scene together at Happening! 2015. Just like last year, we're inviting Portland's musicians, bookers, managers, music writers, label owners, and the various characters who make music happen in this town. Last time around, we made some connections, opened some doors, and learned some tricks. We're doing it again, and we'll have the same program that made the first one such a success:
  • Experts leading small groups on topics like running a label, legal issues for artists, and booking shows
  • Veterans hosting a discussion on the urgent issues we're all facing as Portland music people
  • Maybe most importantly, sometime shoot the breeze with our old and new pals

Happening! 2015 will be an exploratory conversation about how music works around here, and how artists, professionals, and supporters shape the scene. We'll focus on the issues we all deal with - how do you get paid for the work you love when everything's changing? How do get good music out to the most people? But we'll have plenty of time to address everyone's individual questions, too.

So bring your stories, questions, and ideas. Once again, we’ll bring snacks, beer, experts, and conversation. Let’s work together to make music happen.

Presenter: David Gluck is a Portlander, a musician, and music professional, probably in that order. Since coming home to Portland in 2010, he has performed and recorded with The Sorry Devils as a guitarist, bassist, and singer. He made music his day job for the first time at CD Baby, where he was a music publishing specialist, and now works with labels and artists at Rumblefish, a music licensing firm. He also volunteers as the Compilation Coordinator for PDX Pop Now! in his excessive free time. This is his second year working on RACC's Happening!

About Sleep:
"The words have failed them all. Since by the time you've read this far you've already read words that are intended to be touchstones but which do nothing but make it easier to not hear what should be all about hearing: their music.

So let's dispense with "stoner" and "doom" and while "metal" is a good catch-all even that does what SLEEP does an injustice. What SLEEP does and has been doing since
1990. Since San Jose. Since vocalist and bassist Al Cisneros hinted darkly at his next act after Asbestosdeath. Make something that was like something you had never heard/felt
before even if you had heard/felt it before. Like wind or the yawning subsonic expanse of
an earthquake: something undeniably large.

And like ragas, the songs were not just songs but movements and the movements trended
toward the eternal. Almost time-wise too with songs that lasted as long as some entire
records, which is as long as it needs to be to get short-sighted labels to drop you. And
beyond time, the weight was equally significant. Heavy, sublime and not even a little bit
ridiculous and whether or not these were influenced by the sacramental consumption of
weed really misses the point.

While there may have been a few like them before them, there were none like them really
and certainly none of after them. And so in 2009 when they were reborn with Cisneros
who'd been reframing the world with the band OM, Matt Pike doing double duty with
this and his HIGH ON FIRE, and the estimable Jason Roeder doing the same with
NEUROSIS, SLEEP did what it had done and what it had left to do. Largely and without
pause, make music in tune with The Ages.

Best to be enjoyed? Live and living. See, hear, feel, do it. Well, beyond just music and
well into the experiential joy of pure being. SLEEP. Undoubtedly."

About Nothing:

"Nothing was formed in 2011 by Domenic Palermo. Previously Palermo was the brains behind the early 2000's hardcore/punk act Horror Show. in 2002 Horror Show was put on hold after Palermo was incarcerated for a stabbing that eventually led to a 2 year prison sentence.

Upon his return Palermo would take a lengthy hiatus from music. In 2011 Palermo released a demo tape titled "Poshlost" under the moniker NOTHING. After several attempts at constructing a solid lineup for the band Palermo met Brandon Setta. Setta would bring a lush, rich soundscape and a fresh approach to Palermos vision for Nothing.

Setta and Palermo would handle the writing for the next release, a very rare 12" EP that was released on Japanese boutique label Big Love Records called Suns And Lovers( A play off of the D.H. Lawernce book). It was limited to 300 copies and the bands share was donated back to the label for a Tsunami Relief Charity.

The next release, Downward Years To Come was a 5 song EP and was recorded at the Rubber Tracks Studio in Brooklyn with Kyle "Slick" Johnson. The record was released by Baltimore Label A389 Records in November 2012. The record was written by Palermo and Setta. The concept behind Downward Years To Come was a dedication to several different poets who had taken their own lives.

Setta and Palermo would again head into the studio, this time with Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recordings to write their debut Lp, "Guilty Of Everything" and sign with Relapse Records. "Guilty of Everything" has since been released to brilliant reviews, and cements that "Nothing" are a band to be excited about."

 About Black Pussy:

"When The Rolling Stones wrote their classic track "Brown Sugar" it was originally titled "Black Pussy," but record-label politics got in the way: It was deemed too offensive and the powers at work refused to put it out. So the band had to change the name to something that was easier for the general public to swallow. At least that's how the legend goes.

For Dustin Hill, the creative mastermind and songwriter behind Black Pussy, it sounded like a fantastic band name. It encapsulates exactly what the band is: a sex-charged, '70s-influenced, hide-your-daughters-because-they're-coming-to-town rock ‘n' roll band that sounds like Tarantino directing a Thin Lizzy video in the low desert. Considering the name comes from a song that directly speaks out against racism, Hill isn't willing to entertain the notion that the band intends to offend anyone.

For the past few years, the group has perpetually headed out on nationwide tours, including a full U.S. and Canada stint opening for ex-Kyuss legends Vista Chino in 2013, rightfully earning them the tagline, "ON TOUR FOREVER." The group has also spent the last two years constantly working on heavy, psychedelic rock songs with not only Portland recording engineer Adam Pike (Red Fang, Norska, Black Elk, etc.) but also the legendary Kyuss founding drummer and multi-instrumentalist Brant Bjork.

Black Pussy's heavy, bluesy sound and clear influences of Kyuss, Hendrix and The Who have found a niche in the ever-growing, global stoner-rock movement. The band exclusively uses vintage Sunn gear, pushing a massive 44 speakers when playing live and tends to land shows with the heaviest, sludgiest bands in the Portland, Oregon scene. However, their classic, upbeat, relentlessly hooky tracks have led to Hill coining the phrase "stoner pop," like The Cars meets Black Sabbath. The band's catchy music tends to seduce anyone, even those who walk in off the street after seeing the intriguing band name on the marquis of the venue.

The 2012 debut album, On Blonde, is Hill's baby: It was written and mostly recorded by him alone, though guitarist Ryan McIntire, drummer Dean Carroll, bassist Aaron Poplin and keyboardist Chief O'Dell were later added to the band. The record, which kicks off with the rip of a bong and sounds like a drug-riddled midnight misadventure in a '70s muscle car, even found its way across the ocean as well: The track "Blow Some Steam Off" landed a spot on the February 2013 Metal Hammer compilation. 2013 saw a split release from Black Pussy and LA-based Biblical Proof Of UFOs: a contact high-inducing, 22-minute psychedelic opus entitled "Galaxies."

"For The Sake Of Argument" is the first taste of Black Pussy's forthcoming album, Magic Mustache, which will be out in early 2015. The band's evolved sound takes the feel of rock legends Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Hawkwind and combines it with the heaviness of stoner rock icons Kyuss and Monster Magnet, adding add a potent dose of pop sensibility reminiscent of The Cars and Queens Of The Stone Age for the quintessential stuck-in-your-head-for-weeks, sound that is Black Pussy. Filmed using an analog liquid light projector, the video utilizes a classic yet unique-looking take on the psychedelic and drug inspired imagery popularized in the 60s and 70s. Black Pussy are back doing what they do best: sending on a journey through time and space where vintage gear acts as the controls, and sound waves are the highways."

Feb. 5 – LITTLE NEMO: DREAM ANOTHER DREAM Release Party with Craig Thompson and Farel Dalrymple

WHO: Craig Thompson and Farel Dalrymple
WHAT: Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream release party and signing
WHEN: Feb. 5th, 6-10pm. Craig Thompson will be signing from 8-9pm only.
WHERE: Floating World Comics, 400 NW Couch St

"Winsor McCay was perhaps the greatest cartoonist of all time, and the Sunday newspaper strip Little Nemo in Slumberland is his most enduring creation. Detailing the adventures of its titular character in The Land of Wonderful Dreams, the early twentieth century opus is one of the most inventive and visually stunning works of American art. A century later, the comic medium is still racing to keep up with the richness, draftsmanship, imagination, and wonder of McCay’s fantastic storytelling and wild Slumberland universe.

In Locust Moon Press’ new anthology LITTLE NEMO: DREAM ANOTHER DREAM, many of the world’s finest cartoonists have paid tribute to the master and his masterpiece by creating new Little Nemo strips, following their own voices down paths lit by McCay. Contributors include Paul Pope, JH Williams III, Bill Sienkiewicz, David Mack, Carla Speed McNeil, Charles Vess, Peter Bagge, Dean Haspiel, Farel Dalrymple, Marc Hempel, Nate Powell, P. Craig Russell, Jeremy Bastian, Jim Rugg, Ron Wimberly, Scott Morse, David Petersen, J.G. Jones, Mike Allred, Dean Motter, Yuko Shimizu, Roger Langridge, and Mark Buckingham, among many others.

Published in the fall of 2014 as a hardcover book at the full size of the original Little Nemo broadsheet pages (16″ x 21″), this book will celebrate McCay’s endless legacy, chart his influence on generations of modern cartoonists, and most of all shine a light back on an artist who has given his art form so much, and whose work should be more widely known.

This is a love song for Winsor McCay, Little Nemo, and the limitless possibilities of comics. Join artists Craig Thompson and Farel Dalrymple on Thursday Feb. 5th for an art exhibit and get copies of this beautiful book signed. We will also have exclusive giclee prints of Craig and Farel’s pages for sale. We’ll have over a dozen original pages from the book on display from artists including: David Mack, Cole Closser, Alexis Ziritt, Dave Bullock, Aaron Conley, Mark Mariano, Daniel Elisi, Benjamin Marra, Tom Scioli, Weshoyot Alvitre, JG Jones, Dave Chisholm, Ron Wimberly and Jeffro Kilpatrick"!

Show description:

Doug Fir Lounge presents two powerhouse Seattle tribute bands in a once-in-a-lifetime moonage daydream for lovers of David Bowie and Talking Heads, two of the smartest and most influential acts of the Seventies and Eighties. BowieVisionand This is Not My Beautiful Band have spent the past year packing out the Northwest’s best venues and now join forces to make you sing yourself hoarse and dance yourself silly while shattering your preconceptions about what “tribute bands” are about.

Don’t expect cheesy imitations featuring the obligatory big suit or lightning bolt face paint. What you’ll get instead is far better, namely a couple of eight-piece musical juggernauts burning down the house and putting out the fire with gasoline (musically speaking, of course.) Delivering classics that run the gamut from “Life on Mars” to “Life During Wartime,”BowieVision and This is Not My Beautiful Band will delight diehards and casual fans alike.

BowieVision bio:

While others imitate, BowieVision elevates. Forgoing the pretense of wigs and makeup and focusing instead on interpreting David Bowie’s eclectic and expansive musical catalog, BowieVision raises the bar for what a tribute band can be.

In fact, a BowieVision performance is better described as a celebration than a tribute. While lead singer Stefan Mitchell’s dynamic vocals and sense of showmanship are impressive enough, he also shares Bowie’s rare gift for connecting with an audience by creating an atmosphere that’s simultaneously epic and intimate, an approach that resonates with audiences on a deeper level than mere impersonation ever could.

Combining deft musicianship, masterful stage presence, and stunning lighting and video effects, BowieVision’s concert-magnitude experience draws capacity crowds to premiere venues like the Crocodile, the Triple Door, the Showbox, and Nectar in Seattle, and the Crystal Ballroom and Doug Fir in Portland. The band puts its unique stamp on rock anthems like Rebel Rebel and Suffragette City; the wide-screen balladry of Life on Mars?, Space Oddity, and Changes; mid-70s “plastic soul” (Golden Years, Young Americans, Fame;) art-pop experiments like Fashion, Heroes, and Ashes to Ashes; and the high-sheen Eighties classics Let’s Dance, China Girl, Modern Love, and Blue Jean.

Although Bowie’s personas have been ever-changing, his music is timeless. It’s this realization that elevates BowieVision above the realm of trite nostalgia. It may be a bold statement to make about a “tribute” band, but it’s a fact: BowieVision is the real deal. Accept no imitations.

This is Not My Beautiful Band Bio:

In the words of guitarist/vocalist Kenny Darling, “This is a project of passion. A loud, public thank you to one the greatest bands of our lives... TALKING HEADS!” In 2013 Kenny and an ever-evolving group of like-minded musicians coalesced around the idea of delving deeply into the music of the band that he says has haunted his music making for years, bonding over countless conversations that circled through cul de sacs crammed with Talking Heads imagery, an intoxicating loop of Stop Making Sense perpetually on their TV screens and in their heads. Their debut at 2013’s annual “Come As You Aren't” cover night at the Skylark has led to a string of blissful performances in Seattle and Portland with many more planned in 2015.

More about RUSSIAN ROULETTE…

How it works: each show begins with a full wheel of juicy story prompts. One of the 8 storytellers will be randomly drawn. They spin the wheel to decide the prompt for their story. They can play or pass. If they pass another teller can steal their prompt. Then the risky part…each storyteller has only 5 minutes to come up with a true 5-minute story based on that prompt! It’s like we invented a new game called truth AND dare.At the end of the night, the audience will select a winner who will receive 50 bucks and some other cool prizes, like bragging rights for life. The winner will be invited to come back to the next show! And one lucky audience member will also win some prizes!

Gorgeous, R&B-tinged electronic music from this Brooklyn-based duo.

8:30pm | $10.00 advance $12.00 day of show

Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett, aka Beacon, introduced themselves to the world with the No Body and For Now EPs, both released last year on Ghostly International. The EPs were united by minimalist, R&B-influenced instrumentation, and also by a lyrical theme, with both serving as meditations on the darkness that underpins the most intense of human emotions: love.

The duo's debut album The Ways We Separate both consolidates and develops these ideas. The album focuses, as the title suggests, on the idea of separation -- both within the context of relationships and in a more intimate, psychological sense. As Mullarney explains, "The narrative contained inside The Ways We Separate deals with two kinds of separation: one where two entities grow apart, and the other where we grow apart from ourselves. Over the course of a relationship, the two sometimes happen together, one being the result of the other."

Desires, passions and regrets are central to the songs on The Ways We Separate, which take a variety of perspectives to construct a nuanced reflection on the album's central theme. 'Between the Waves' draws a clever analogy between relationships and soundwaves falling out of phase: "I know all the ways we separate/ Where we start to fade at different frequencies." 'Overseer' catalogues a parting of the ways with discomfiting clarity: "Isn't it fine?/ Taking it slow?/ Watching you watch me walk out your door." And album closer 'Split in Two' explores how the extremes of love and loss can take you far away from being the person you thought you were, making explicit the connection between the two ideas of separation: "What I'd do for you?", sings Thomas Mullarney, "Split myself in half/ Divided into two."

Musically, The Ways We Separate finds Beacon working with a richer sonic palette than ever before --as Gossett says, "The production on this album is much more expansive than anything we've done thus far. We spent a lot of time exploring new gear and experimenting with how to pull a wide range of sound out of various instruments. Some of the key sonics that shaped this LP are analogue synthesis, lots of heavily processed guitar work, and vocal layering/processing." While the abiding mood remains that of late-night introspection, the production draws from elements of hip hop and a wide gamut of electronic music, marrying intricate beats and subtle textures to honeyed pop melodies that belie the album's conceptual depth. Rarely has bleakness sounded so pretty -- this is a record that's deceptively, compellingly beautiful, an exploration of a place both discomfiting and darkly seductive.

    ABOUT AESOP ROCK --

New York-born, San Francisco-based Aesop Rock (aka Ian Bavitz) is a critically acclaimed hip hop artist/producer, recognized for his dense and abstract word play. Between 1997-2007, he released five solo albums, three EPs, and a 45-minute piece of music designed for runners, commissioned by Nike. His lyrics have been published in the New York Times Best Seller Hip Hop Speaks to Children, by author/activist Professor Nikki Giovanni (Oct. 2008), as well as Yale University's Anthology of Rap (Nov. 2010). Aesop is also co-founder of 900bats.com, a creative resource of arts, information, and oddities.

Since the release of Aesop's last solo album None Shall Pass (2007), Aesop toured the US extensively, as well as Australia, UK and Europe, returning to an eclectic mix of collaborations, landing him both behind the board and in front of the mic. He provided music for the short film Wallyball (Apr. 2008) for the McSweeney's "Wholphin" short film series, scored the Ace Norton-directed short film Dewana's Bridal (Sep. 2009), produced the third installment of the Slug and Murs Felt series A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Nov. 2009), contributed both beats and vocals on Kimya Dawson's album Thunder Thighs (Oct. 2011), created music in collaboration with Jeremy Fish's "Ghosts of the Barbary Coast" art show in SF (2009), co-produced SF rock outfit Dirty Ghosts' debut album Metal Moon, (Feb. 2012), and started and recorded albums with two new groups -- Hail Mary Mallon (with rapper Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz) and the Uncluded (with Kimya Dawson). Aesop also started his own imprint, Block Block Chop, which is now the home to his catalog.

Skelethon marks the first entirely self-produced album for Aesop Rock, with additional instrumentation and back-up vocals from the likes of Allyson Baker (Dirty Ghosts), Hanni El Khatib, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan, Rob Sonic, and the Grimace Federation, as well as scratch performances provided by long-time friend and collaborator DJ Big Wiz.

Starting off by touching on the death of a close friend in 2008, subject matter wades through subsequent losses, jostled memories, relationships gone awry, and the occasionally amusing, if futile, attempts we make to cope with these things. There is light humor in the darkest corners, juxtaposed with pitch black in the jokes. With Kimya Dawson as its sole vocal collaborator, Skelethon is packed with Aesop's unique handle on interweaving imagery and urgency together in what will surely prove to be the centerpiece of his catalog thus far.

    ABOUT ROB SONIC--

Residing in the boogie down Bronx, Rob has been devoted to music since he was a kid, maintaining a deep connection to it in multiple forms (The Beatles, The Stones, Melle Mel, Run DMC, Kraftwerk, The Soul Sonic Force, The Talking Heads, Zeppelin, BDP, Public Enemy, Muddy Waters, UltraMagnetic MC's, The Clash, Devo, Goblin, David Bowie, EPMD). He developed his expressive abilities through grinding for 10 + years in New York City, living life in a way unique to the New York experience -- hard fought, hard luck, high stress and no money tempered by huge dreams. In 2000, Rob gained critical acclaim as the front man of the group Sonic Sum, who's album The Sanity Annex won rave reviews in the U.S., Europe and Japan, with SPIN magazine voting it the "2nd Best Album of the Year that No One Heard". Kudos rolled in from publications such as The Source, The Wire, XXL, NME, Urb (Next 100), and CMJ. Word got around and soon came offers from artists like DJ Krush and Funkstorung to get down on their albums, a collaboration with SLuG (Atmosphere) and Mike Ladd, plus shout outs from Radiohead, Bobbito Garcia, Autechre and others. Rob also loves spaghetti and happened to share the same management as Def Jux honcho El-P, and a friendship, as well as mutual artistic respect, formed. In 2003, Rob signed with the label, asking only for the opportunity to make a record with his heart, mind and soul, hence, Telicatessen. And it's all we could have ever asked for.

    ABOUT HOMEBOY SANDMAN--

Peace and love. My name is Homeboy Sandman. I'm a musician from Queens, New York. Hip hop is my genre. My label is Stones Throw, and though they may be a little slow when it comes to artist bios, everybody knows that when it comes to progressive hip hop, creative hip hop, boundary pushing hip hop, hip hop changing hip hop, nobody does it better. My fourth album is dropping this summer. It's called "First of a Living Breed." That's going to be my fourth album in 5 years. In addition to 2 EPs and a 33 track mixtape. I'm pretty prolific with mines. Can't nobody rhyme like me and I get respect from all walks of life on this planet. Rich to poor, this color to that, because I show love for real, and I'm not scared. Peace.

WED JAN 21
Aaron Chapman (Nurses)
We're thrilled to host the visionary outsider blues singer Willis Earl Beal!

8:30pm | $8.00 advance $10.00 day of show

Some artists dive so deep into the oceans of their inner worlds that they eventually land on universal territory, mapping the secret currents and hidden crannies of the heart. In a quiet, intuitive way, Willis Earl Beal has found this path. He makes songs out of his inner world, feeling his way carefully toward what he, and he alone, wants to hear.

The results, however, have a striking resonance. From inner monologues and banal details rises the soulful, evocative music of his new album Experiments in Time, Beal's return to his own unique sound and process. Loose beds of dreamlike keys, raw guitar, bass, piano, and found sound create beautiful frames for Beal's uncanny, emotional voice and multifaceted philosophical perspective. Crafting each track layer by layer, moment by moment, Beal envisioned the album as a contemplative whole.

"I have a rigid standard for what is right and what is wrong," he notes. "I didn't start out with the intention of creating this album. Each note I play or sing, each lyric comes directly from a feeling. If there is no feeling, the note cannot come."

The event, part of the Stumptown Stories Series, is free - which is ironic - because you could leave the pub STINKING RICH!  Everyone will be given a REAL LIVE Treasure Map of a considerable lost horde that can be located in the City of Roses.

Doug Kenck-Crispin is the Resident Historian for orhistory.com and co-producer of the podcast Kick Ass Oregon History, which airs weekly on xray.fm.

JB Fisher is co-author (with JD Chandler) of Portland On The Take and is hard at work researching and writing about some of Portland's most intriguing unsolved crime cases.
