A shoegaze, dream pop, psych and post-punk music festival
Pitchfork declared that 2023 was the year that the shoegaze revival hit its stride. Well, in the Pacific NW, shoegaze never really went away, with past trailblazing events in Portland like Shoegazerâs Ball / Fuzzy Ball, and now Seattleâs recent Seagaze and Tremolo festivals leading the way. Currently in Portland, however, thereâs a shoegaze-shaped hole in our festival calendar. Our all-volunteer membership committeeâmade up of members of Kallai, Ten Million Lights, and presenting sponsor DKFM Shoegaze Radioâhave joined together to remedy that.

Patrick Wolf today announces the release of his long-awaited seventh album Crying The Neck due out 25th April via APPORT / Virgin Music and available to pre-order here. The album features guest appearances from Zola Jesus, Serafina Steer, drummer Seb Rochford and Wolf's sister Jo Apps. Alongside news of an extensive UK, European and US tour, the dates of which are listed below, Wolf has shared first single "Dies Irae", an anthemic "affirmation of life" set in the days before the passing of his mother.
"Dies Irae" comes from the Latin Requiem Mass and translates to "the day of wrath" or, as Wolf puts it, "the day of separation from the living". He wanted to write a response to that idea, seeing it instead as a "an affirmation of life in the last days of knowing you are about to lose someone you love, and a courageous - almost rebellious - choice against the misery to use the time remaining to deepen your love or joy with each other." He wrote it "to give myself another day I didn't have with my mother during her rapid descent in illness" and hopes that this might also help others who have been through the same process. The string arrangement at the end of the song is based on the Medieval Gregorian chant 'Dies Irae' from the Latin mass. The song, Wolf says, completed the narrative arc of the album, connecting the opening tracks with the "death suite" of pieces in tribute to his mother. "I finished the lyrics as an imaginary last conversation with my mother in her art studio and out to the garden as the evening falls," he says. "My sister Jo Apps came in the last days of mixing to sing the backing vocals, and in a way, it meant that we could both share a last dance in the kitchen with our ma together."o

About TOPS:
Musicians David Carriere, Jane Penny, Marta Cikojevic, and Riley Fleck â write timeless music that reliably threads immediacy and depth. Bury the Key, their first full-length since 2020 and with new label home Ghostly International, is a captivating reintroduction for the MontrĂ©al band: ever refined, undoubtedly masters of their melodic craft yet unafraid of evolving and testing themselves against different, at times darker tones. The album faces feelings once locked away, engaging the give-and-take between happiness, hedonism, and self-destruction. While often inhabited by fictional figures, their glowing, grooving, self-produced songs draw from personal observations: intimacy (both inside and outside the band), toxic behavior, drug use, and apocalyptic dread. When recording started, they noticed a shift and leaned in, jokingly dubbed âevil TOPS,â says Penny. âWeâre always kind of seen as a soft band or like naive or friendly in a Canadian way, but we made it a challenge to really channel the world around us.â Through the lens of a looming epoch and the clarity that comes with age, TOPS dip into a more sinister disco realm with Bury the Key, giving their soft-focus sophisti-pop a sharpened edge.

The Crystal Ballroom is honored to play host to another birthday celebration for the late great Fred Cole of legendary garage-rock trio Dead Moon. He and wife (âkickass garage bass playerâ) Toody influenced an entire generation of Pacific NW musicians. Fred was â as The New York Times noted in his obituary, âa cult hero of the Pacific Northwest music scene as the leader of the long-running garage-rock band Dead Moon⊠playing a rough and raw sound that long predated grungeâs noisy take on punk.â Toody Cole anchors the night along with Los Hackals and The Reverberations.
Last yearâs celebration of Fred was so much fun that we decided to do it again! Join us as we toast the memory of one of Portland's late great rock icons!

L7's signature sound of a heavy, catchy, mixture of punk, metal, noise and pop helped usher in the era of Grunge. Since their recording career began in 1987, the band has released six studio albums, three live albums, one covers LP, and one greatest hits to date on labels including Epitaph, Sup Pop, Slash, and Warner Brothers.
Founded in Los Angeles in 1985 by Donita Sparks-guitar and vocals, and Suzi Gardner- guitar and vocals, the band features Dee Plakas on drums and Jennifer Finch - bass and vocals.
While particularly known for their unforgettably raucous live performances, the band also spawned underground and mainstream hits including Shove, Pretend We're Dead, Shitlist, Andres, Fuel My Fire and more. Their music can be heard in television (ER), video games (Grand Theft Auto, Rock Band 2) and popular films including The Perks Of Being a Wallflower, Natural Born Killers and John Water's classic Serial Mom, in which they also star as fictitious band Camel Lips.
In 1991, the band founded Rock for Choice, a pro-choice organization with the Feminist Majority Foundation producing nationwide benefit concerts featuring the biggest musical acts of the day from Joan Jett to Nirvana.
In 2001 the band went on an 'indefinite hiatus'. After 15 years and at the urging of their fans via social media platforms, L7 reunited in 2015 and performed sold out shows around the globe to rave reviews and accolades from a new generation of music fans.
Their triumphant return continues with two new singles Dispatch from Mar-a-Lago and I Came Back to Bitch, released on Don Giovani Records. The latter, released in February of 2018 kicks off a US Tour in April in addition to tours of South America, Mexico, and Europe this summer.

With five GRAMMYÂź Awards, 14 Blues Foundation Awards, and a groundbreaking career spanning more than 50 years under his belt, Kebâ Moâs got nothing left to prove. Just donât tell him that.
Kebâ reflects, âIâm still breathing, and Iâm still hungry. Iâm still out there going for it every single day.â
Born and raised in Compton, Kebâ began his remarkable journey at the age of 21, when he landed his first significant gig playing with Jefferson Airplane violinist Papa John Creach. For 20 years, Kebâ would work primarily behind the scenes, establishing himself as a respected guitarist, songwriter, and arranger with a unique gift for linking the past and present in his evocative playing and singing. Though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name, Kevin Moore, it wasnât until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Kebâ Moâ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics were quick to take note of Kebâs modern, genre-bending take on old-school sounds, and two years later, he garnered his first GRAMMYÂź Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album with Just Like You. In the decades to come, Kebâ would take home four more GRAMMYÂź Awards, top the Billboard Blues Chart seven times, perform everywhere from Carnegie Hall to The White House, collaborate with many, including Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, The Chicks, and Lyle Lovett; have compositions recorded and sampled by artists as diverse as B.B. King, Zac Brown, and BTS; release signature guitars with both Gibson and Martin; compose music for television series like Mike and Molly, Memphis Beat, B Positive, and Martha Stewart Living; and earn the Americana Music Associationâs 2021 award for Lifetime Achievement in Performance.
In addition to his extraordinary musical output, Kebâ has also established himself as a captivating onscreen presence over the years, appearing as himself in Martin Scorceseâs The Blues, Aaron Sorkinâs The West Wing, and even the iconic childrenâs series Sesame Street. He flexed his acting chops in a wide variety of projects, as well, portraying Robert Johnson in the 1998 documentary Canât You Hear The Wind Howl, Howlinâ Wolf on CMTâs Sun Records, and the ghostly bluesman Possum in John Saylesâ 2007 film Honeydripper. A fixture on late-night TV and award show stages, Kebâ has also performed on Letterman, Leno, Conan, Colbert, and Austin City Limits in addition to appearing on nationally televised broadcasts from The Kennedy Center, The Ryman Auditorium, and Eric Claptonâs Crossroads Festival.
A passionate philanthropist and outspoken activist, Kebâ has devoted countless hours and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support social, environmental, and racial justice throughout his career. As a celebrity mentor with The Kennedy Centerâs Turnaround Arts Program, which began under the guidance of First Lady Michelle Obama and the Presidentâs Committee for the Arts and Humanities, Kebâ âadoptedâ The Johnson School for Excellence in Chicago, where he teamed up with teachers, students, and parents to help develop a thriving arts education program. As a longtime ambassador for the Playing For Change Foundation, heâs supported the non-profit from its early days in its quest to provide free music education and basic needs like food, water, medicine, clothing, books, and school supplies to children worldwide.
Bringing it all back home, Kebâ looked to his own story for inspiration on his captivating album, Good To Be, artfully linking the grit and groove of his Compton roots with the strum and twang of his more recently adopted hometown of Nashville, TN, where heâs lived and worked for the last eleven years. The collection, drawing on country, folk, blues, and soul, transcends genre and geography, weaving together a joyful, heartwarming, and relentlessly optimistic tapestry that encompasses the entirety of this once-in-a-generation artistâs larger-than-life career.

About Shawn Colvin:
In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy, and a searing sense of humor. In the 30 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards, released thirteen albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work.
Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she lived until she was eight. A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale, IL. drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970âs Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin, TX.âthe city she now calls home. She moved to New York at the decadeâs end as a member of the Buddy Miller Band where she met producer, guitarist and co-writer John Leventhal. Leventhal inspired Colvin to find her own voice as a songwriter. She began honing her skill and was soon signed to Columbia Records. Her first album, Steady On, produced by Leventhal, won the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.
Colvin was most recently honored with an induction into the 2019 Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, alongside legendary artists Lyle Lovett and Buddy Guy. In a moving induction speech, Jackson Browne praised her as âineffableâ â âthat which is impossible to express in wordsâ â and extolled, âNot many writers are able to do what Shawn does. Itâs a very special way of relating what really matters. It takes an original to get our attention. Shawn is utterly original in her singing, and original in what she speaks about in her songs.â
Over the course of three decades, Shawn Colvin has established herself as a captivating performer and a revered storyteller, well-deserving of the commendation of her peers and the devoted audiences who have been inspired by her artistry. As she enters her thirtieth year as a songwriter and performer, she continues to reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music.
