The 22-year-old South London ambassador, Stormzy, has ignited a new generation of UK rap with his neo-grime flow and his utopian and progressive attitude towards commercial music. He's gained an unprecedented amount of support from his contemporaries including some of the forefathers of the genre such as Wiley, Skepta, Krept & Konan, Lethal Bizzle and Wretch 32.

Stormzy began displaying his ability with a barrage of charismatic freestyles including his infamous #WickedSkengManFreestyle series which to date have gained seven-figure viewings. After generating a huge online presence, he then proved his versatility as a recording artist when he released his first project, The Dreamers Disease, which, after unparalleled support for the visuals for the lead track, Not That Deep, reached the number one spot on the iTunes hip-hop chart prior to its release. Stormzy then went on to create history with his untouchable verse on the Fire In The Booth Cypher where Charlie Sloth claimed "A star was born".

The artist's work rate has lead to a rapid ascent into commercial music, with a number of his tracks being play listed across international radio stations and Zane Lowe naming him as one of the Future 15 artists for 2015. Following this success, Stormzy was also named 3rd in this year's BBC sound of 2015 list and has gone on to win three MOBO award's and a BET Award for International Newcomer Act where he competed against some of the icons of the scene, representing the progression of UK music. In addition, Stormzy broke a world record earlier this year for becoming the first artist to ever chart in the UK top 40 with a freestyle.

Andy Shauf is a storyteller, a singer of heartbreak and regrets, isolation and loneliness, reflecting his prairie surroundings in Regina, Canada. Meticulously written over four years, Shauf's The Bearer of Bad News is a warm and welcoming album, bathed in weathered piano, dampened drums, softly-strummed guitars and clarinet, which lends its unique timbre to frequently brighten – or hauntingly underscore – the songs' darker undercurrents. Fans of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Harry Nilsson, take note.

Scattered Clouds is a dark, experimental, post apocalyptic rock group, from Hull, QC. Since the project's inception in 2010 and the release of a self-titled EP on Hull based label E-Tron Records (www.etronrecords.com), Scattered Clouds has evolved from a solo home studio project to a performance act that creates a trance-inducing, orchestral and intense cinematic experience. Blending harsh yet controlled sounds, brooding rhythms, processed vocals, and unsettling analog synthesizer sounds with a strong sense of form and dynamics, Scattered Clouds' music can be described as industrial, dark-wave, post-rock and avant-pop. The First Empire is the group's first full-length release and was released on E-Tron Records April 21, 2015. Scattered Clouds is a three-piece band consisting of vocalist and bassist Philippe Charbonneau, keyboardist Mike Dubue and drummer Jamie Kronick.

EXPLODE INTO COLORS = three weird aunts + basement party + drawing and sewing till our hands hurt but we keep on keeping on + lost mix tapes + lots and lots of dramedy. One of us currently plays with Kickball and some of us used to play in Thunder!Thunder!Thunder!, Hornet Leg, and Japanther. One of us sometimes dances with Janet Pants. We also make clothes, pictures of all kinds, videos, teach drums, and classify insects.

After forming Wampire, Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps steadily began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, OR, scene that has produced labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl's attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO's bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire's debut full-length, Curiosity.
The choice of Portrait was a natural one, with both Tinder and Phipps believing he'd be able to contribute almost as much to the record as they would. And so, in mid-August Tinder and Phipps each brought fragments of song ideas into the studio, before deconstructing, re-arranging, and fitting them back together piece by piece -- at times lyrics and melodies were thrown out, brought back from the dead, or improvised on the spot.

This loosely structured approach made the process truly collaborative, with producer Portrait occasionally chipping in ideas for lyrics, arrangements, and instrumentation. The resulting nine tracks are instantly memorable, while defying easy categorization. Says Phipps, "We realized the record began to stray away from having a 'sound' and gradually became a platter with an assortment of sounds. The record showcases a flavor we haven't quite dug into before."

The album's diverse combination of sounds ultimately helped give birth to its title, Curiosity -- a word that invokes the listener's wonder at what will greet their ears next, while also describing the overall curious tone the record possesses.

First single, "The Hearse" serves as the perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the band -- its opening notes swelling instantly with electronic organs over a driving drum beat. By the time bass and vocals kick in, you're already hooked. Elsewhere, "Orchards" weaves an infectiously breezy melody on the strength of vocal harmonizing, tuneful whistling, and undulating guitar lines. In some cases, Wampire's unique rhythms are best described by the band members, as with "Trains," a Motown-meets-Strokes track that Tinder perfectly summarizes like so: "It's sexy, sounds huge, and by all means should be blamed for future babies."

The album concludes with the equally sensual "Magic Light," a song centered around a dark seductive bass groove that sets the tone for Tinder's come-hither lyrics. It's the kind of track that draws you ever further into the record's beguiling clutches, leaving a lasting impression that remains well after its final notes have faded out.

Rolling Stone just premiered the band's duet with the legendary Emmylou Harris, "a haunting, harmonica-fueled take" on "Waiting Around to Die" by Townes Van Zandt. It's one of several striking covers of Americana staples found on the recently released, Redemption & Ruin. Much more than a tribute, this artful collection of songs is a poignant interpretation of tradition.

Country Standard Time described the new album as "an amazing sonic gumbo consisting of every significant form of American music filtered through DM3's unique perspective and skill set." The band's perception is as penetrating on stage.

TOBACCO

It's been almost two decades since baby TOBACCO first plugged in a tape deck, popped the top, and found the dark magic that's fueled so many sonic forays into his genreless bog of beat-blasted hypnagogia and otherworldly-yet-earthen pop. The Pennsylvanian experimentalist has since helmed countless Black Moth Super Rainbow releases, remixed outsiders as offbeat as HEALTH and unexpected as White Zombie, and produced MCs ranging from Aesop Rock to Beck. But it's on his fourth solo album that TOBACCO winds up coining an apt name for his vast empire of moldering electro-fied dirt: Sweatbox Dynasty. The new LP—his second for Ghostly International—finds the rural recluse resurrecting an old approach to hack a new path through the muck. This may be his most unintentionally psychedelic and left-field creation yet, full of rhythms that start and stop like a tractor on its last piston, resonating melodies made to fuel transcendental meltdowns, and vocals that hiss, gurgle, and growl. "It's my baby," says TOBACCO—a disturbing mental image if you overlook the beauty in his decrepit works. A song like "Human Om," for example, swirls revving analog synths, drum machine clatter, blown-out gong hits, sitar hum, and all manner of unidentifiable noise to create an unexpected sense of calm. It's an almost trance-inducing space where our host gets touchy-feely in his own way, voice seething, "You can be my light come up in the morning/And I can be your spiral spinnin' down." The cheery na-na-na's and punchy rhythms of "Gods in Heat" similarly contrast against dirging chords and heavy distortion, while "Warlock Mary" swaths a springy funk riff in thick layers of warped tones. "I do know how to ruin a good song," TOBACCO says with perverse pride. "I just gotta keep pushing to find new places to go." Interstitial pieces like "Wipeth Out" or "The Madonna" are exactly that—strange, minimal fuzz bombs that jerk and groove to alien cadences. It shouldn't come as a surprise that fermentation was part of the process. After finishing 2014's Ultima II Massage, TOBACCO began feverishly working on his next album, and then he stopped. "I felt I'd done everything I set out to do," he explains. "I thought maybe I'd go away for a long time, and I went a year without even plugging anything in." But when he was finally at peace with the idea of exile, the music came rushing back and wouldn't let up. In a flurry of days and nights he made Sweatbox Dynasty, and while each of his previous LPs felt like a honing of what came before, this one plays like a lush island of oddities unto itself. Except in one regard—in starting over, TOBACCO found himself using a technique from in his nascent days of recording. He laid down every single effect and track on cassette, individually, before transferring it to a sampler and damaging the part as needed en route. The result is wild, and heard all over these songs. On an album with no guests, the tape deck is TOBACCO's one true collaborator—
the Second Zombie Beatle there to eff up all his prettier inclinations. Like how the sticky coast and thump of "Dimensional Hum" keeps getting derailed by what sounds like a fritzy radio dial, and the stonery dub of "Fantasy Trash Wave" bends and snaps over its slippery breakbeats. "An album of linear songs is just boring at this point," says TOBACCO, and he makes extra good on his promise to innovate ever more crudely with Sweatbox Dynasty's closer. At over six minutes, "Let's Get Worn Away" first plays like eleven more songs spliced together at unpredictable intervals—jock jams collide against rap bumps, synthesizer ether, and shadowy electro-pop. But on repeated listens, madness clearly becomes method, as our anti-hero lulls us into a state of intense, earned peace. This time when he stops, he's got closure, and we're the ones left with an undeniable urge to dig our hands back into that aural gunk once again. Tracklist 01. Human Om 02. Hong 03. Wipeth Out 04. High Tides

From the coastal shores of the mind, by way of the Midwest, comes High Tides, the hazy synth duo of Warren Kroll (Forrest, Dorosoto) and Steven Lutes (Mall Security, Kontyx). Launched in 2011 as an offshoot of their sleazy, acid-electro collaboration as The Red Falcon Projects

Odonis Odonis

Toronto's underground staple Odonis Odonis broke out in 2011 with their scrappy, blown out debut, Hollandaze. The dynamic band instantly began turning heads with their haze filled live shows and unique combination of influences. On their Polaris Prize nominated follow up Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, Odonis Odonis masterfully crafted a sonically divergent record that pushed them into groundbreaking territory.

Odonis Odonis' latest epic, Post Plague, delivers an unforgettable blend of industrial, electronic and science fiction. OO's post-apocalyptic anthems construct stark soundscapes and saturate them with layer upon layer of industrial grime. They do this with an enhanced sense of melody and willingness to push the boundaries of traditional pop structure.

Dean Tzenos' vocals sit clear and upfront, delivered with a foreboding intensity that matches each song's dystopian reality. Denholm Whale's bass lays demolition charges nimbly sidestepped by Jarod Gibson's futurist rhythms.

On Post Plague, Odonis Odonis delivers a hypnotic pulse that leaves a lasting impression. Post Plague forces us to realize what we are – vulnerable, frantic creatures yearning for authenticity.

Nick Jaina will celebrate the release of his newest Fluff & Gravy Records album Brutal Lives with a full-band performance.

Brutal Lives (Fluff and Gravy Records, Sept 2016) is easily Nick Jaina’s most daring album to date. And that is saying a lot when you consider that Nick has made a career out of re-inventing himself. The 14-track album primarily features work that he originally composed for a contemporary dance piece in the summer of 2014. Though the songs were not used, Nick thought the recordings had some value in them, so he refashioned them, adding vocals, choruses and ambient sounds to give them new life.

Stylistically, the album jumps from the indie-pop standout “Make A Life”, to the haunting “Co-Creators”, to the jarring “Saw You On The Train Last Night”. And I swear, “Fell Too Much In Love” would be right at home in a John Hughes film.  Due to the unusual provenance of the recordings, almost every instrument was played and recorded by Nick himself. He gave the collection of songs the title that he proposed for the original dance piece, which was also rejected: Vies Brutales, or Brutal Lives.

This is Nick's second release on Fluff & Gravy Records, a follow-up to 2013's Primary Perception. It will be available digitally on September 16, and coupled with a limited-edition printing of an essay that Nick wrote for people who are new to dance, How To Enjoy Dance. 150 copies of the essay will be released in October.

The single, "Make A Life" is now approved for sharing and is downloadable, while the full album will be made available on September 16.

PataPDX is pleased to announce INTER/MISSION, a two person exhibition with installation work from Los Angeles-based artist Allison Peck, and videos from Washington D.C.-based artist Rives Wiley. This exhibition was curated by S/PLI/T, a Portland-based curatorial group co-directed by Sam Hopple and Taryn Wiens.

Exhbition Dates: October 6–November 3, 2016
Gallery Hours: Saturdays, 12–4pm and by appointment

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Rives Wiley (riveswiley.com) makes videos of figures positioned in elaborate built environments that blend the real, surreal, and virtual. Their behaviors walk an uncomfortable line between restraint and repetitive action that recalls the pull and push of social conventions on ourselves.

Allison Peck (allisonpeck.com) intervenes in individual sites, adeptly using languages of material, shape, and color to break down any pretense of a gallery as place-less, as a way to explore notions of space and our positions within it. For this exhibition she will install site-specific work in conversation with the space, the curators, and fellow artist Wiley.

Both Wiley and Peck work with ideas of environment: Wiley creates fictive environments to mirror the influence of our own social and virtual settings, while Peck forces us to confront the immediate environment of the gallery space. Each artist points to our agency, or lack thereof, in the ever- present context of our surroundings.

More info at http://splitprojects.weebly.com/intermission.html

ABOUT THE CURATORS

S/PLI/T produces two-person exhibitions in established and alternative art venues and vacant spaces. By introducing emerging artists with conceptual depth and contemporary concerns to new viewers, S/PLI/T encourages artistic practice at a critical stage while inviting the community to connect around fresh and vital work. S/PLI/T encourages accessibility and cross-disciplinary engagement through interpretive materials, interviews, public events, and a published catalog.

The name S/PLI/T describes a duality that is present in the two-person exhibitions and implies two pieces of a whole. We are interested in the dialogue that can take place in the space(split) between different art practices.

S/PLI/T is co-directed by Sam Hopple and Taryn Wiens and is based in Portland, Oregon.

KING

Twins Paris and Amber Strother and musical sister Anita Bias are KING.

In 2011 KING Independently released their first EP to much acclaim; title track "The Story", "Supernatural", and "Hey" make up the 3-piece introduction to their carefully crafted dream-soul sound. Hours after the release, their EP had traveled far to music lovers and tastemakers alike, making new fans of many.

KING's eclectic sound is relatable yet not simply defined. Though they play with the boundaries of their many influences, throughout each song is the common thread of a certain soulful authenticity. The smooth vibe, intricate production, and harmonic style of their music evolved beautifully in their home studio, a product solely of the three women and a result of their Minneapolis and Los Angeles roots.

Paris produces KING's songs, while Amber and Anita are the primary singers. The three work together on songwriting and arrangements to create their unique sound, garnering such accolades as NPR's Song of the Day and 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing, Billboard's 10 Best R&B Songs of 2014, The Guardian's New Band of the Day and Best Albums of 2013, Metro UK's Singles of the Week, and the 55th GRAMMY Award for 'Move Love', their collaboration with Robert Glasper on his Best R&B Album 'Black Radio'. KING have completed their long-awaited debut album and are excited to invite listeners further into their sonic kingdom; listen to their conversation on NPR's All Things Considered about their music-making process for the upcoming record, scheduled to be released February 5, 2016 on their independent label, KING Creative.

Joey Dosik is a singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist / producer with a voice that you may not expect to come out of that body. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Joey continues to be apart of the recent musical renaissance in the City of Angels. As a teenager he absorbed the Jazz tradition of Leimert Park while listening to the radio and his parents' Carole King records. After several years of touring as a pianist with other artists, he settled down in LA to focus on songwriting and collaborating with such artists as Vulfpeck, Miguel Atwood Ferguson and Mocky. Dosik recently offered up the first two songs off his upcoming Game Winner EP, which he made while recovering from basketball related knee surgery. Also upcoming is a full length album, Inside Voice, which he co-produced with Mocky (Feist, Jamie Lidell), both due for release in 2016.
