Sigur Rós have announced an upcoming North American tour this fall. For the first time in their career, the band will be touring without a support act, instead offering the audience two sets (+ intermission) starting from 8:30pm sharp at each show.

The month-long run is comprised primarily of theater shows, marking the band’s most intimate tour in a decade. In keeping with the scale of the venues, the group will be performing without the string and brass sections that have been characteristic of recent performances, opting instead to focus on the core unit of the band itself. The shows will give the group a chance to road test new music, the first time since the tour leading up to the acclaimed '( )' album in 2002 that the band has performed new material ahead of album recording sessions. Alongside this experimentation played out in public, the band is also planning on attempting new interpretations of old songs that haven’t been played in a very long time.

Though the scale of the venues and band will be reduced, the live production will be characteristically stunning, designed again by the team behind their previous "Knights of Illumination" award-winning tour.

SIGUR RÓS - A BIOGRAPHY

Named for singer Jonsi's youngest sister Sigurros -- born just before the band started in 1994 -- Iceland's Sigur Rós were formed by guitarist and vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson (Jónsi), bassist Georg Holm and drummer Agust Gunnarsson, while all were teenagers. Their sprawling debut LP, 'Von' ('Hope'), was released in 1997 on the local label Bad Taste. In 1998 Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band on keyboards and the expanded band made the string-heavy 'Ágætis Byrjun' ('A Good Start'), which was released the following year to huge accolade in their homeland. Agust then departed and was quickly replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason.

"Svefn-g-englar," their first release to be distributed outside Iceland, was hailed as NME's Single of the Week late in 1999, and so began
a rapturous press reception in the UK, soon to be mirrored around the globe. In Q magazine 'Ágætis Byrjun' was deemed "the last great record of the 20th century." April 2000 dates in England with Godspeed You Black Emperor! were capped off by an appearance at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, and they also opened several dates of Radiohead's European tour before year's end. By the end of the year, it had won the US Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music; it was also declared Iceland's Best Album of the Century.

'( ),' Sigur Rós' third album, was released in 2002. The majority of the material was honed on the road prior to being recorded at Alafoss, the group's studio, located outside Reykjavik. The album featured a raw, darker sound in comparison to its predecessors, and was also notoriously wordless and title-less throughout. Nevertheless it established itself as the band's most successful record in America, a status it holds to this day. Three years later, they issued 2005's 'Takk...,' featuring tighter arrangements and brighter tones, best exemplified by the uplifting -- and hugely requested by film directors -- "Hoppipolla."

In 2007 they released the documentary film "Heima," which chronicled the band's free tour of Iceland the previous year, accompanied by the acoustic/rarities double album package 'Hvarf/Heim.' The following year they wrote, recorded and toured their fifth album, 'Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust,' all within the calendar year of 2008. The final shows of the tour were recorded on both film and audio, and later released as the double live album and DVD 'Inni' in 2011. They then went on "indefinite hiatus." During this time, Jónsi launched a solo career, first collaborating with boyfriend Alex Somers (as Jónsi & Alex) on 2009's 'Riceboy Sleeps,' then releasing 2010's 'Go' under his own name.

The hiatus ended in 2012 with the quietly beautiful 'Valtari,' which realised the band's long-held ambitions to make a choral/ambient album. Recorded in several sessions over a period of years, the record saw the band re-embracing the stately pace and deferred gratification of their earlier work. The release was supported by the Valtari Film Experiment, wherein film directors interpreted the music instead of the band members doing interviews.

The band went back on the road in summer 2012 for the first time in four years. In November -- at the biggest show ever by an Icelandic artist in the country's capital Reykjavik -- the band unveiled the first material written without departing member Kjartan Sveinsson, which would soon become the harder and more electronic seventh Sigur Rós album, 'Kveikur.'

This summer, with no new album to promote but new songs to road-test, the band are once again challenging themselves and changing things up by shedding the comfort blanket of string and brass sections and additional musicians, and going back to being the core band that is Sigur Rós...as you've never seen them before.

The discussion "Show and Tell: Gentrification in Portland" includes image presentations and short screenings depicting what we know about past and present Portland, and what we see happening in our midst.

In addition to pre-planned presentations by community groups such as the Cascade Stereoscopic Club (CSC) and local artist Stephen Slappe (screening the short educational film "Turning Around on Redlining"), we invite the general public to informally present images, stories, short video clips, or ephemera on the topic of gentrification. For questions email ourcityinstereo@gmail.com.

This event is presented in conjunction with Sharita Towne’s current exhibition at Newspace Center for Photography, Our City in Stereo, examining gentrification in Portland through images, sound, and historical texts. The exhibition runs through October 1, 2016.

Kevin Greenspon’s history as a mindful and concise composer of graceful ambient compositions for guitar, synthesizer and cassette tape reach for new horizons on his newest release. “To Leave A Mark” stitches the ethereal atmosphere of previous work with rhythmic elements of techno, noise and pop music. On his 2016 tour, each song’s performance is synchronized to rapid-cut video projections that melt into abstract pools, coaxing the viewer into a state of self-reflection. http://kevingreenspon.info/

Sage Elaine Fisher aka dolphin midwives began composing at age 5 and explored guitar, sound healing, raga, and opera, before developing her polyrhythmic harp style with an african drumming circle while on hiatus on Maui. She began performing her effected harp pieces in 2013, and her latest release, Orchid Milk, took place at the Kenton Masonic Temple with the VSB Gamelan Orchestra this spring. http://www.dolphinmidwives.us/

Vocalist and composer Xenia Rubinos crafts movingly powerful songs dipping in and out of genre and structure to create a sound that is fearlessly her own. Xenia's powerhouse vocals are at the center of her music which grows from a wide range of influences from R&B to Hip-Hop to Caribbean rhythms and jazz all delivered with a soulful punk aura. Her debut album Magic Trix was released in 2013 by Ba Da Bing! Records to wide critical acclaim. Pitchfork lauded the radiant singer as "a unique new pop personality" while a profile in The New Yorker described her work as "rhythmically fierce, vocally generous music that slips through the net of any known genre". Xenia's energetic live show and presence echoes some of the larger than life iconic singers she admired as a child including Judy Garland, Nina Simone and La Lupe while her powerhouse vocals recall the pop sensibility of Mariah Carey and soulfulness of Erykah Badu. Touring the US and Europe extensively, she has played more than 150 shows both as a headliner and supporting act for such diverse bands as Man Man, Battles, Coco Rosie, and Deerhoof. Xenia has been hard at work on her followup full length LP due out Spring 2016.

He's also a freelance Graphic Designer/Photographer making him a full-time creative.

Brookfield Duece:

Brookfield Duece arrived on the hip-hop scene in the early 2000's as Duece, a 20 year old rapper whose style provided a chilled, lyrical, storytelling alternative to the rising street dance influenced sound controlling the Bay Area. With soul samples, 808 drums, and funk strings under detailed lyrical ability taught to him by his late cousin Eugene Vasquez from Rochester, NY, Duece brought a message in every song while having both a west and east coast feel. Being the best of both worlds in style put Duece on the frontline in re building an underground hip-hop subculture for the Bay Area.

In 2016, Duece moved from Oakland to Portland to engage with his heaviest fanbase area while continuing to record and build for a debut mainstream release. Continue to look for new things from this artist in 2016

MATTY:

Considered one of the most consistent and talented artists in the Northwest region, MATTY has solidified his reputation through 7 albums and 10 projects total over 7 years. Following his debut album in 2009, MATTY has had an incredible streak of releases, tours and content. A dominant force on stage, his cleaver lyrics, smooth flow and raw talent has allowed him to share the stage with some of the industries best. E-40, Twista, Kid Ink, Too Short, Tech N9ne and a plethora of others, it's easy to say that MATTY has a consistent track record in the studio and on stage.

His networking ability is one of his strongest traits working with producers and other artists from all over the world including Portland heavy hitter's Illmaculate, HANiF, Mic Capes and Tope along with out of state artists such as Mistah F.A.B, Marv Won and Chase Moore.

Beat set by the one and only TROX Diesel:

Samuel Troxel, bka Trox, is a Portland bred and based producer and DJ. His introduction to music started with taking drum lessons during the 2nd grade and eventually graduating to downloading an early version of Fruity Loops in middle school. In addition to working with almost every Northwest heavyweight, he has also crafted tracks for 50 Cent, Ab-Soul, Royce 5'9" and more. He currently is in the process of releasing his collaborative project with Ty Farris titled Room 39.

The Portland Black Music Festival celebrates the immense variety of local Black contributions to music in genres including, but not limited to, jazz, soul, and R & B. Encouraging appreciation for Black culture and heritage, the festivities will highlight high quality, live musical performances from homegrown talent and will emphasize community empowerment.

Over the course of a year, trumpeter/educator Farnell Newton and musician/producer Tony Ozier began to grow the festival idea in conversations, during rehearsals, on road trips, and at family gatherings. These conversations grew, and the festival was publicly announced on an April 2016 segment of OPB's "State of Wonder" hosted by April Baer. Baer's interview with Ozier and Newton led them to announce the festival and speak it into reality. Once plans were made public, Newton reached out to DJ and community activist DJ O.G.One to partner and develop the festival.

This trio of artists and active community members has used their music connections and community resources to secure support from media partners (including KMHD, Oregon Music News, KBOO, 107.5, Portland Radio Project, and XRAY.FM) and to establish the festival in its first year. They are also planning for the festival's growth and possible impact in years to come. Over time, Newton, Ozier, and DJ O.G. One hope to cultivate a stronger music community and to give participating Portland musicians increased exposure. Ultimately, the goal is to empower Black artists and to bring people together to celebrate and work together on musical and social issues.

TR/ST

Trust is the alter ego of Toronto artist Robert Alfons.

Formed in 2009 along with collaborator Maya Postepski, Trust released its first singles, "Candy Walls" and "Bulbform," on Brooklyn-based Sacred Bones Records in 2011 before signing with Arts & Crafts for the 2012 release of debut full length, TRST.

Since 2011, Trust has performed with DFA1979, Crystal Castles, Austra, Balam Acab, Glass Candy and Hercules and Love Affair and garnered glowing praise from top international critics at Pitchfork, VICE, The Guardian UK and many more.

Trust's Tales of lust, wax, and erotomania carry along on a dense black vapor of speed, space and tears.

Trust is a pop hit factory buried deep in the mud.

Cold Cave

Cold Cave is the electronic music of acclaimed musician, writer and artist Wesley Eisold. Beginning in 2007, Cold Cave has become a name synonymous with the contemporary resurgence of Darkwave and Synth Pop sub-genres, propelling Cold Cave to perform at world class museums The Getty and the Guggenheim, as well as performances with legends Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, among others. The sound has spanned from experimental industrial noise to rock'n'roll influenced electronic music.

According to the Guardian, "Wesley Eisold is an absolutely new, young god of nihilism and despair – he brilliantly captures Cold Cave's aesthetic: the Morrissey of How Soon Is Now wailing over Nitzer Ebb beats and New Order melodies."

According to Eisold, if anything, his music reflects what it feels like to live in the present. Eisold, whose baritone is as rich and resonating as that of Phil Oakey, Nick Cave or Iggy Pop, says "Of course we love the lineage of the genre, early experiments with machines to convey human emotion; the marriage between pop and industrial music. At the time it was documenting the early stages of a new world, and we are recording what it feels like to be alive in that world."

Pioneer Courthouse Square
11:00am Saturday, September 10, 20167:00pm Sunday, September 11, 2016

September 10 & 11 Houseguest will activate Pioneer Courthouse Square with its second Artist in Residence, Libby Werbel and Portland Museum of Modern Art, in conjunction with Portland Institute for Contemporary Art as part of TBA:16.

Werbel will install Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA), a weekend-long, build-it-ourselves outdoor modern art museum. The installation will be on display Saturday & Sunday September 10th & 11th, 11:00am–7:00pm with a performance series on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1:00pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Through PMOMA, Werbel orchestrates an exhibition in the heart of the city, inviting an impressive roster of visual and performance artists to engage with the space. PMOMA is an investigative project focused on the lack of major contemporary and modern art institutions within a growing metropolis. Werbel aims to draw a direct link between Portland’s lack of a contemporary art museum and the impressive output of the creative community. Does Portland’s quickly shifting economic demands endanger the cultural equity essential to maintaining the quality of any major city? Is it possible to have a museum without an established infrastructure to support it? What does a museum look like when fashioned through our ideal ethical processes? Werbel hopes to inspire dialogue around the notions of the ‘museum’ itself and larger institutional modalities for exhibition. Throughout the weekend of September 10–11, PMOMA partners with Houseguest and PICA to investigate these ideas in Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Ing Ing (Variation 3) is an experiential tonal composition that merges time and space, proprioception and movement. Utilizing open-ended drones and acoustic beating, its installation space becomes an interactive 3D album; the choice of movement and composition are in the hands and minds of each individual listener, as they sculpt their own experience in space.

Ben Glas is an interdisciplinary artist and composer based in Portland, Oregon. Glas' work focuses intently on egalitarian proprioception, stasis/rush within digital systems, and notions of spacetime. Working extensively with sine-waves and unconventional softwares, Glas engages physical spaces and their ephemeral inhabitants to remind participants of a momentary sonic awareness within space and time.
