New Orleans-born Branford Marsalis is an award-winning saxophonist, band leader, featured classical soloist, and a film and Broadway composer. In the process, he has become a multi award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence.

The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band’s latest release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. But Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras around the world, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena.

His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. He received an EMMY nomination for composing the music for the History Channel’s documentary, Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre. His screen credits further include original music composed for: Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, and Rustin starring Chadwick Boseman.

All Ages // November 1st - 30th // Schedule and Tickets

PAM CUT’s Tomorrow Theater turns one on November 1st!

Much like the theater itself that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with “cinema unbound” over 250 nights a year, the inaugural PLUS PLUS kicks off in November, flipping the script on traditional festivals focused on singular art forms. PLUS PLUS is created to meet the moment, celebrating multi-faceted, multi-media artists, storytellers and artists who explore and question what tomorrow brings in a myriad of creative ways.

This year’s theme, Better, Together, features twenty days of parties, screenings, talks, happenings and events curated around how to make sense of what the future may hold. Featuring twenty-five one-night-only experiences that combine at least two art forms every night – film, music, food, media arts, gaming and live storytelling alongside hands-on programs in self-care, family fun, and yes, beavers! – PLUS PLUS holds a unique space and place for artists and audiences not content to be contained to interact and be unlimited in their interests.

SPACES OF EXCEPTION (2018) is a documentary resulting from the long-term multimedia project “The Native and the Refugee," profiling the American Indian reservation in the United States alongside the Palestinian refugee camp in the Middle East. ABOUT New Blue Sun

André 3000’s New Blue Sun LIVE performances are a mesmerizing blend of musical exploration and raw emotion, showcasing his unique artistry. Joined on stage by Carlos Niño, Surya Botofasina, Nate Mercereau and Deantoni Parks, the group’s masterful instrumentation captivates audiences with the same approach to how New Blue Sun was formed—inspired by the present moment and alive with the surroundings. The stage is set ranging between an intimate atmosphere and sensory grandeur. New Blue Sun LIVE is more than a concert; it’s a sonic odyssey that leaves fans both enchanted and reflective; reaffirming André 3000’s status as a visionary in contemporary music.

ABOUT André 3000

André Benjamin—best known as André 3000—is one of the most revered, celebrated artists of the last three decades, an auteur whose work in music, film, fine arts, fashion, and more continues to influence the cultural landscape on a global scale.  His work as one half of the iconic hip-hop duo Outkast, with Anton “Big Boi” Patton, established a brand new voice/style within rap that had never been experienced before. The 7x Grammy winning artist released his first solo album in 20 years this past November—New Blue Sun, a wind focused, instrumental album that represents the next step in André’s creative evolution. Released to widespread critical acclaim, New Blue Sun became the first instrumental album to land on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and the opening track "I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time," broke the record for longest song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

Yes, 30 years ago, Khaela Maricich (who later started the band The Blow & my nextdoor neighbor in the Evergreen State College dorms) invited me to DJ at a Halloween party taking place in a barn with a dirt floor located in the middle of the forest somewhere in the pitch-black dark of night in Olympia, WA. If you think Portland is/was weird, it is NOTHING compared to Olympia in the mid-1990s!

Hailing from the Bay Area, HALOU /huh-loo/ is a band led by the songwriting duo Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom, accompanied live by musicians Sergey Ledovsky on drums, Andre Pasternak on bass, and Erica Mulkey on Rhodes Piano and backing vocals.

Kallai was formed in the summer of 2023 by members of Trance to the Sun, Luscious Apparatus and Lost Echoes. While inspired by the post-punk, shoegaze and doom acts of the past few decades, Kallai’s perspective is evolving with those scenes and seeking to spin sounds that unfold throughout time. Their current sound has been likened to a blend of "Dark Fleetwood Mac" and "Angry Early Cocteau Twins," showcasing their evolution from their early trip-hop roots in the mid-90s.

Noteworthy achievements in their history include a video for one of their songs obtaining 40M views on YouTube, 41K monthly listeners on Spotify, having one of their albums on KEXP’s “Most Played Albums of All Time” list, releasing an album on the esteemed indie label Nettwerk Records, collaborating with artists like Robin Guthrie and Zoe Keating, performing showcase performances at SXSW and Bumbershoot (where they notably played two official shows at a single Bumbershoot), and opening for Bob Mould on a US Tour.

HALOU released their newest EP, THE BUTCHER’S BILL in Summer 2024. Vinyl will be released just in time for the show.
Wuppertal Germany's alternative electro rockers inspire with a perfect synthesis of hard-hitting guitar riffs, pounding machine beats, and driving sequencer loops. Supported by England's legendary producer John Fryer, known for his work with Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, and White Zombie, their international sound is astonishing. In 2021, the band signed with the US label Cop-International, and five releases have followed to date, three of which have reached the top ten of the German alternative charts.

Also worth mentioning is their collaboration with Richard Kruspe (Rammstein), Billy Gould (Faith No More), and Chris Hall (Stabbing Westward) as part of a joint project for victims of the Ukraine war in 2022. The three exceptional artists impressed with their special live qualities in the summer of 2023, when they became the first band in the world to sell out a 360-degree multimedia rock show with an extraordinary silent concert concept, ten times in a row. Suck on that, U2.

Responsible for this and everything visual with Johnny Tupolev are two other friends and unofficial band members: Oscar-nominated VFX specialist Frank Petzold (All Quiet on the Western Front, Armageddon, Starship Troopers) and Emmy Award-winning video artist Christoph Vitt. These two will be accompanying the band on tour and producing a documentary.

The Stews

After releasing their debut album, What Was, in April of 2022, The Stews have been a non-stop touring machine. Playing hundreds of shows a year has allowed them to hone in their musical and songwriting skills alike. With 2023 summer tour sellouts ranging from Washington DC's 9:30 Club, Charleston's Windjammer, New York City's Bowery Ballroom, and countless more, The Stews have proven that they are a musical force to be reckoned with. The summer tour even featured a venue record-breaking 800+ day-of-show tickets sold at Avondale Brewing in Birmingham, AL.

In addition to the aforementioned legendary venues, The Stews played to packed out, ravenous crowds at Bonnaroo, Sweetwater 420Fest, and Roosterwalk. The band drove straight from their summer tour finale at Appleton, Wisconsin's Mile of Music to meet up with Moon Taxi to support their fall tour. After months on the roading supporting Moon Taxi, the band returned home to Charleston, SC to finish up their second studio album. With thousands of tickets sold across a three night NYE run in Charlotte, Savannah, and Atlanta, the band capped off a record breaking year.

Looking forward to 2024, The Stews are thrilled to release this new music to a starving audience. The album can't be confined to one genre, as fans will find songs reminiscent of The Allman Brothers, Audioslave, Pink Floyd, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise to name a few.

Cornelius

Cornelius is the brainchild of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada. A performing musician since his teens, Oyamada created his creative alter-ego (the name is an homage to the Planet of the Apes), in the early 1990s from the ashes of his previous project, Flipper's Guitar.

With the 1997 release of Fantasma, Cornelius gained international recognition for his cut and paste style reminiscent of American counterparts Beck and The Beastie Boys and was released internationally by Matador Records. Being called a 'modern day Brian Wilson' for his orchestral-style arrangements and production techniques, Cornelius subsequently became one of the most sought after producer/remixers in the world, working with a wide range of artists including Blur, Beck, Bloc Party, MGMT, and James Brown.

With 2002's Point, Cornelius' music took a quantum shift, going from sampling 'found sounds' to looping organic elements and creating lush soundscapes. Using water drops as the rhythmic backbone of 'Drop' on his vocoder-infused cover of 'Brazil', the album dazed and amazed fans and set the path for the next phase of his career.

2007 brought this philosophy to an even higher level with the release of Sensuous. Cornelius' live shows are known around the world for spectacular visuals (all perfectly synchronized to the performance), custom lighting that doesn't simply augment the performance, but becomes another instrument within it, and a full band of equally talented and diverse players.

The companion piece to the album Sensurround + B Sides, earned the nomination for 'Best Surround Sound Album' at the 2009 GRAMMY Awards.

The summer of 2016 saw the release of Fantasma Remastered, on Lefse Records. The package, a 2LP reissue of his classic album, also included 4 additional outtakes and earned Pitchfork's 'Best New Reissue'.

Cornelius has recorded music for Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, scored the anime mega-film Ghost in the Shell Arise, performed as the backbone of Yoko Ono's reformed Plastic Ono Band, played the Hollywood Bowl with Yellow Magic Orchestra, and co-wrote and produced the Japanese artist salyu x salyu.

ESG with Strange Babes and Dirt Twins

ESG is coming back to Portland! After their triumphant show last year, they decided to revisit us one more time to bring the party. This is IT.

ESG formed in the South Bronx in 1978. Their unique mix of hip hop and punk has never been replicated, though many have tried. ESG’s hit “UFO” is one of the most sampled songs of all time. It cannot be overstated how important this band is.

Even more important than their irreducible originality is the fact that this band will MAKE YOU dance. They are as live as you’ll ever hear music. Come on down for the party of the year.
