Since Hiromi’s debut album Another Mind (2003), the world-renowned pianist’s sound has evolved with every release, erasing the lines between jazz and classical, composition and improvisation. Now she changes tack again with her heaviest, funkiest album yet: Sonicwonderland.

Hiromi describes the hard-hitting nine-song set as “a new journey of adventure,” one that began in her imagination. As motifs, phrases, and timbres blossomed in her mind, she began thinking about players who could help her realize this specific sound. “Making a record is like making a movie, and I’m the director looking for the perfect actor for each role.” For her new quartet, Hiromi’s Sonicwonder, she cast bassist Hadrien Feraud, drummer Gene Coye, and trumpet player Adam O’Ferrill.

The genesis of Sonicwonder begins in 2016, when Feraud subbed for bassist Anthony Jackson at some gigs with Hiromi’s then-current trio. “When I was playing with Hadrien in that setting, I started to feel like I wanted to write some music just for him,” she recalls. “That was the first thing that made me want to go in this direction, and what made me want it to form this band.”

For the drums she sought a warm, organic sound, rendered with joy and humor, and thought of Coye, who she’d met when they played shows together with the Stanley Clarke Band. Feraud and Coye both reside in Los Angeles, and had made music together many times, another important consideration. “I feel that it's always very important to have great chemistry between bassist and drummer.”

As she continued composing, Hiromi heard one more instrument in her head: trumpet. Again, she wanted a very specific sound. “What I really love about the trumpet is its low mid-range, and I was looking for somebody who can play in that range with a beautiful tone.” After reviewing some of O’Farrill’s performances online, she invited him to a casual jam session, and the ensemble was complete.

Born in Hamamatsu, Japan, Hiromi began studying piano when she was six years old. When she was 17, Chick Corea invited her to play with him at a Tokyo concert. She attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was mentored by jazz legend Ahmad Jamal. A prolific artist, Sonicwonderland is Hiromi’s twelfth studio full-length and second album of 2023; earlier this year she recorded the soundtrack to Blue Giant, an animated feature film based on the popular manga.

Hiromi is a perennial favorite on DownBeat’s Annual Critics and Readers Poll, and has performed at the world’s finest jazz festivals, including Montreux, Umbria, North Sea, Newport, and Monterey. Her work has been celebrated by media including the New York Times, NPR and NPR Music, and the Washington Post, and she was a featured performer at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony in 2021.

Featuring Steve Smith (drums), Manuel Valera (keyboards), and Janek Gwizdala (electric bass)

Drummer Steve Smith has been touring and recording with his group, Vital Information, since 1983. In 2023, Steve Smith celebrated the 40th anniversary of Vital Information by releasing a newly recorded double CD entitled Time Flies.

In 2025, the group is set to release their latest studio recording, New Perspective. The album features songs that Steve Smith has previously recorded, but with vastly different arrangements from the original versions. Included on New Perspective are three Journey songs: “Who’s Crying Now,” “Open Arms,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The album also includes a Steps Ahead tune written by Michael Brecker called “Sumo,” and reworked versions of three Vital Information classics: “The Perfect Date,” “Charukeshi Express,” and “Eight+Five.” Additionally, the album features two new original compositions. New Perspective is set for release in Spring 2025.

The newest lineup of Vital Information features two virtuoso musicians with wide-ranging experience. Keyboardist Manuel Valera is a Guggenheim Fellow and Grammy-nominated artist, born and raised in Havana, Cuba, now living in NYC. He plays and records with many of the New York jazz elite, including Antonio Sanchez, Dafnis Prieto, and John Patitucci. Electric bassist Janek Gwizdala, originally from London and currently living in Los Angeles, records and tours with Peter Erskine, Mike Stern, and Randy Brecker. He is regarded as one of today’s most in-demand bass players. Both new members of Vital Information are accomplished bandleaders and recording artists with multiple albums to their names.

The new trio version of Steve Smith and Vital Information collectively creates a powerhouse sound. While the band is rooted in the straight-ahead swing of bebop, they also explore exotic time-signatures inspired by South Indian Carnatic music and present adventurous funk-driven renditions of jazz standards. Seeing Steve Smith and Vital Information live in concert offers a unique opportunity to experience their high-level musicianship, joy on stage, and collective virtuosic improvisation.

The next edition of Flame Vintage Vinyl Dance Party is inspired by the ideology of early days of disco. Dance and sing along as DJ Action Slacks & special guest LéMix (of Twirl) spin vintage vinyl disco classics and fun rarities of the 1970s & early 80s!

During the early 1970s, an era of extreme cynicism, people from marginalized communities found themselves drawn to dance clubs (then called discothèques) where they could escape the challenges of life by getting lost in music, oftentimes having what can be described as "spiritual experiences" on the dance floor. For many, discos became a unifying sacred space of diversity, love, affirmation, empowerment, & rejuvenation.

Also, DJ Action Slacks will be inducting Donna Summer & songwriter/producers Niles Rodgers & Bernard Edwards (of Chic) into the Dance Hall of Flame. Help us celebrate their contributions to the evolution of dance music!
Put on your best disco threads and get ready to clear your head as you get lost in the music!

Party time: 8 pm to Midnight

Etran de L’Aïr (or “stars of the Aïr region”) welcomes you to Agadez, the capital city of Saharan rock. Playing for over 25 years, Etran has emerged as stars of the local wedding circuit. Beloved for their dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun schlazed melodies, Etran stakes out a place for Agadez guitar music.

Etran is a family band composed of brothers and cousins, all born and raised in the small neighborhood of Abalane, just in the shadow of the grand mosque. Sons of nomadic families that settled here in the 1970s fleeing the droughts, they all grew up in Agadez. The band was formed in 1995 when current band leader Moussa “Abindi” Ibra was only 9 years old. “We only had one acoustic guitar,” he explains, “and for percussion, we hit a calabash with a sandal.” Over the decades, the band painstakingly pieced together gear to form their band and built an audience by playing everywhere, for everyone. “It was difficult. We would walk to gigs by foot, lugging all our equipment, carrying a small PA and guitars on our backs, 25 kilometers into the bush, to play for free…there’s nowhere in Agadez we haven’t played.”

Whereas other Tuareg guitarists look to Western rock, Etran de L’Aïr play in a pan-African style that is emblematic of their hometown, citing a myriad of cultural influences, from Northern Malian blues, Hausa bar bands, to Congolese Soukous. It’s perhaps this quality that makes them so beloved in Agadez. “We play for the Tuareg, the Toubou, the Zarma, the Hausa,” Abindi explains. “When you invite us, we come and play.” Their music is rooted in celebration, and invokes the exuberance of an Agadez wedding, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars, as simultaneous solos playfully pass over one another with a restrained precision, forceful yet never overindulgent. Yet even at its most serious, Etran’s music is engaged and dynamic, reminding us that music can transmit a message while lighting up a celebration. This is music for dancing, after all.

Far from an overnight TikTok star, Ohio native Abe Parker honed his skills the old-fashioned way: through years of busking on street-corners, in cafes, and other venues across the country, developing an assured voice as a singer-songwriter, and an atmospheric production style working with hip-hop artists in his adopted home of Atlanta. This hard-won growth, plus a few life struggles, set the stage for an explosive debut in 2022, when Parker's arrestingly frank songs "Butteries," "Stupid Face," and "Empty House" each quickly went viral, revealing that rare breed of new artist: someone who can quickly and single-handedly turn early sparks of connection on social media into fully-realized lasting songs. He released these on a subsequent album, Everwoodwhose ghostly beauty and unltered emotion lled a deep need in a hurting world. And his latest singles-the dark-night-of-the-soul surrender "It Is What It Is," and the plaintive prayer "Numb"-cement Parker's place in a burgeoning scene of soul-baring, indie-folk singer-songwriters like David Kushner, Noah Kahan, Chance Peña-artists who somehow reach through the shiny chill of digital technology to touch human hearts on the other end.

About the headliner:

Papp Johnson touched the stage for the first time at SF Sketchfest in 2010 and changed comedy forever by winning Sony’s Death at a Funeral stand-up competition… all while sitting down. Papp then took his talents south to LA and used his incredible storytelling ability and punchlines to grow his legend even bigger with appearances on Comedy Central as well as several festival appearances (SF Sketchfest, Treefort Comedy Festival, 1865 Festival).

In 2023, Papp recorded his debut album “Timeless” for Kill Rock Stars Records, which became one of Paste Magazine’s Top 10 comedy albums of the year.

And if you think he looks familiar, it might be from one of his many appearances in commercials for Dunkin Donuts, Samsung, Fox Sports or shows such as “That Damn Michael Che” or “Wu-Tang: An American Saga”. No matter where you’ve seen him, there is no denying that Papp Johnson’s art is timeless.

Dance to vintage vinyl (1950-1980) by women!
Soul - "classic" Rock - Pop - Blues - "oldies"  - Latin - International - Disco - Glam
Familiar Favorites & Rarities!

It's the DJ Action Slacks  annual Women's History Month dance party just in time to remind everyone that women actually DO matter AND this year it falls on International Women's Day!

We'll celebrate women who made it through the gauntlet, past the gatekeepers long enough to make their voices heard on vinyl.

Whether they released dozens of records or just one, these women created the musical document of our experiences, thoughts, & feelings during a time when women's civil rights were becoming a political issue.

Join me at the Kenton Club to dance to a variety of music made by women. Let's celebrate our endurance, perseverance, talents, creativity, humanity, and rebelliousness!

"Respected LadyLand" alludes to a place where I think so many women would love to exist. I know I would personally like to live in a land where I'm seen and believed, valued, treated with respect, compensated fairly without exploitation, free from intimidation or harassment, with autonomy over my own body and mind. Maybe if we envision such a place perhaps we'll feel compelled to mobilize to fight for it.

For this edition of Respected LadyLand we're going to try blocking the time:
8 pm - 10pm will be mostly 1950s & 1960s music
10pm to Midnight will be mostly 1960s & 1970s music

Loaded guns, space heaters, and big skies. Welcome to the lethal littered landscape of Jim Heath’s imagination. True to his high evangelical calling, Jim is a Revelator, both revealing & reinterpreting the country-blues-rock roots of American music. He’s a time-travelling space-cowboy on a endless interstellar musical tour, and we are all the richer & “psychobillier” for getting to tag along.

Seeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock & roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim becomes a slicked-back 1950′s rock & roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly, while Jimbo incinerates the Stand-Up Bass. And then there are the “Heatettes”. It’s like being magically transported into a Teen Exploitation picture from the 1950′s that’s currently taking place in the future.

Listening to the REVEREND HORTON HEAT is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot-rod engine of your heart. The Reverend's commandants are simple.

ROCK HARD,
DRIVE FAST,
AND LIVE TRUE.
