Dream House, 412 NE Beech St, Portland
9:00pm Thursday, June 8, 20231:00am Friday, June 9, 2023

DJ Alice Wonder of the duo behind Down the Rabbit Hole (Mondays 9-10pm) takes the decks live at the newly opened Dream House Bar. It's always an adventure with her behind the decks, but expect sounds from groups playing synth punk, minimal wave, mutant pop, and plenty more.

Located at 412 NE Beech St., Dream House is building on some of what former XRAY mainstay Beech Street Parlor did in the space--creating a casual neighborhood place that's more house party than just a regular bar.

Hailing from Chicago’s renowned Wax Trax! Records stable of recording artists, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT have been conjuring up sonic tales of sex, blasphemy and kitschy horror since 1987. Along with label mates such as Front 242 and Ministry, TKK (as often abbreviated), helped develop the industrial music genre, yet have consistently evolved their sound, creating one of the most diverse repertoires in modern day music. They can be described as electronic rock, heavily influenced by both disco and punk, with the distinctive use of spoken-word samples lifted from B-movies laced throughout their songs. The band has released 14 studio albums, a slew of compilations and singles, and has appeared on a variety of soundtracks.

Mariee Siou has been a fixture in the Neo-folk scene since her 2007 debut "Faces in the Rocks"—now acclaimed as a cult classic in the indie music world. She is revered for her delicate finger picking and poetic mysticism, often drawing, as from the ether, immense feeling through a voice of soft potency and otherworldly wordsmithing. She is known as a healing singer and as being a visionary artist, channeling and transmitting medicinal qualities through her music. Mariee Siou has extensively toured Europe and the US, and opened for acclaimed artists like Mazzy Star, Buffy St. Marie, Bert Jansch, Brightblack Morning Light, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Joanna Newsom. In 2021 she played Le Guess Who? In Utrecht, Netherlands, at the invitation of Phil Elverum of The Microphones/Mt. Eerie, and she continues to tour the US and Europe.

Coping with childhood abuse and an undiagnosed mental health condition, Schreurs discovers punk rock as a youth and becomes part of its tight-knit scene. When a psychiatrist blindsides him with a bipolar diagnosis in his late 40s, Schreurs begins his journey of mental health discovery. A longtime journalist, he gains the trust of other punks with lived experiences and tells their stories alongside his."

8th Vanport Mosaic Festival

Join us for two weeks of memory activism to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport - and to honor the community that called Vanport home.

From May 18th to May 29th, the 8th Vanport Mosaic Festival will offer in-person, virtual, and self-paced memory activism opportunities to Remember, Repair, Reclaim, and Re-image our collective story.

---

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport, once Oregon’s second-largest city and the largest WWII federal housing project in the United States.  We will commemorate Oregon’s Katrina-like disaster with exhibits, art performances, a reunion/celebration of former Vanport residents, documentary screenings and oral history recordings, tours of the historic Vanport area, and community engagement activities.

Flood survivors are now in their 80s and 90s, so the Festival offers a long-overdue opportunity to honor and learn from their experience. The 75th anniversary of the flood, especially in light of the Covid pandemic and the ongoing devastating impact of climate change, will offer a timely opportunity to reflect on the state of emergency preparedness of our city, particularly on how disasters often replicate and deepen social inequalities.

For a taste of the Vanport Mosaic Festival and its impact, we invite you to watch these short documentaries:

The Talbott Brothers were born and raised in Imperial, Nebraska, a rural midwest town consisting of two thousand people. Siblings Nick and Ty started writing songs at a young age after discovering their dad’s old guitar and vinyl collection. Their song ‘We Got Love’ (2017) brought them national attention as they toured across the US in an old van they found on Craigslist. Their albums ‘Ghost Talker’ (2019) and ‘Letters’ (2022) garnered attention from 'Rolling Stone' and 'Billboard' calling it “cinematic” with “captivating blood harmonies.”

They resided at a studio in the woods living in an airstream and sprinter van in their mom’s birthplace of Portland, Oregon while recording their record ‘Letters’ before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee. Their acoustic EP, ‘Stripped from Studio Spacecamp’ features acoustic renditions hand selected from ‘Letters’ and a cover of Kings of Leon’s ‘Beautiful War.’ The duo is embarking on a spring tour with acoustic guitars, piano and
an electric guitar in select cities.

Glitterfox is a Portland, OR-based indie folk band lead by married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker with Eric Stalker and Blaine Heinonen on bass and drums. Since being named one of Portland’s “Best New Bands” in 2022 by the Willamette Week and coming away from Oregon Country Fair 2022 as one of the most buzzed about breakout acts, Glitterfox has worked relentlessly to electrify their live show while honing in on the inimitable “west coast indie meets Southern Americana songwriting” style that defines Glitterfox song craft.

Legendary synth composer and recording artist Suzanne Ciani leads us on a quadraphonic sound journey, exploring the limits of spatial audio and live Buchla performance at the historic First Congregational Church of Portland. Opener Qur’an Shaheed graces us with an extended ambient set, all accompanied by a stunning light experience.

Suzanne Ciani

A five-time Grammy award-nominated composer, electronic music pioneer, and neo-classical recording artist, Suzanne has released over 20 solo albums including Seven Waves and The Velocity of Love, along with a landmark quad LP LIVE Quadraphonic, which restarted her Buchla modular performances. Her work has been featured in films, games, and countless commercials as well. She was inducted into the first class of Keyboard Magazine's Hall of Fame alongside other synth luminaries, including Bob Moog, Don Buchla, and Dave Smith and received the Moog Innovation Award. Suzanne provided the voice and sounds for Bally's groundbreaking ""Xenon"" pinball machine, created Coca-Cola’s pop-and-pour sound, designed logos for Fortune 500 companies, and carved out a niche as one of the most creatively successful female composers in the world. A Life in Waves, a documentary about Ciani’s life and work, debuted at SXSW in 2017. Ciani is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Masters in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley.

Qur'an Shaheed

Qur'an Shaheed (b. 1992, Pasadena, CA) is a pianist, poet, singer and songwriter based in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CA. She has been playing piano since the age of four, trained extensively in classical music through the expertise of her mother Sharon Shaheed and grandmother Monique Simpson. Since 2012 she has been developing her practice as a songwriter alongside her solo piano and ensemble work. She released the album Process, with producer Jesse Justice and Preference Records, in 2020 and regularly performs in and around Los Angeles. Her sound is innovative, highly personal and experimental, incorporating elements of improvisation as well as neo-classical and neo-soul techniques. Shaheed often collaborates with others and has worked with Koreatown Oddity, filmmaker Vashni Korin, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (of which her father Nolan Shaheed is also a member), and she is the keyboardist for Jimetta Rose’s gospel choir The Voices of Creation.

John Duncan (Wichita, Kansas 1953) is a pioneer of performance art, installations, video and experimental audio who has lived and worked in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Amsterdam and northern Italy. His many releases are acclaimed by critics and composers as benchmarks of experimental music.

Schneider TM is a multidimensional music project of Dirk Dresselhaus, named after his nickname Schneider, which oscillates extensively between adventurous electronic pop-music and experimental, sometimes improvised freeform music, while occasionally bringing these and other opposing elements together.

Scot Jenerik (born 1964) is a multidisciplinary artist/instrumentalist, instrument builder, composer and sound engineer.  He has performed, lectured and distributed works extensively in the United States, Europe and Japan for over 30 years.

Mr. Jenerik's explosive performances, incorporating hand built instruments of metal and fire, are infamous both around his home of San Francisco/Portland and throughout the world. Combining elements of Kodo drumming, drone and noise, Jenerik transfers the intensity of physical performance into a throbbing soundscape of rhythms, drones and direct elemental contact.  His most recent performances are exploring harmonies and harmonics through the non traditional use of traditional instruments from Turkey and India.

Chandra Shukla (born Vivek Chandra Shukla 1975 Alameda, California) is an experimental/avant-garde musician interested in audio, video, live performances, graphic design and runs the independent record label Erototox Decodings. His history stems from learning Indian Classical Music by learning tabla from the likes of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and sitar from Pandit Habib Khan.

Xambuca is his main, sometimes instrumental and electro-acoustic experimental but more often non-categorizable music project, and one that has shared the stage with many guests including a rotating cast of characters with audio/visual elements both live and exhibited. The sounds are emitted from synths, guitar, samplers, sitar and vocals.

In 2019, Kris celebrated the 10th anniversary of his American Idol win by releasing “10,” an album of reimagined acoustic versions of some of his most beloved songs of the previous decade, including fan-favorite “Waves” and his platinum-selling single “Live Like We’re Dying.” In 2021, Kris followed this up with the release of “Don’t Stop Dancing” and 4 other singles that launched a new era of music for the Arkansas-born musician. Songs like “Hallelujah! For Now” and “Different Bridges” feature the imaginative songwriting and stunning vocals that put Kris on the map and pave the way for his upcoming album featuring your next favorite song. When not making music and playing it live across the world, Kris lives in Nashville with his wife Katy and three kids.

Italian alt metal superstars Lacuna Coil are shifting the paradigm yet again with new album, Black Anima. Just as Comalies (2002), Shallow Life (2009), and chart-smashing Delirium (2016) upped the ante and rocketed the Milan-based outfit into the upper echelons of metaldom, Black Anima is a level beyond all that. It's both a hard look at the past and a brave sprint into the future. Two years in the making, Lacuna Coil's ninth album arrives after the group published their first book, Nothing Stands in Our Way, in 2018 and celebrated in auspicious fashion their 20th Anniversary with an ultra-exclusive, all-out insane live show in London, dubbed The 119 Show: Live in London. Lacuna Coil have never shied away from hard work. Nor, have they restrained their creative impulses to push things-new songs "Anima Nera," "Reckless," "Veneficium," and "Sword of Anger" are mind-blowers!-to the absolute limit.

New Constellations - the ethereal brainchild of lifelong sidekicks Harlee Case and Josh Smith - encapsulates a sonic dreamscape of eager melodies, striking guitar hooks, and celestial vocals that softly tangles listeners into a web of cosmic glory. The Portland-based duo first explored collaborating when they were 14, recording a song together in Josh’s childhood bedroom, before spending the next 15 years exploring their individual approaches to music separately and eventually crafting the dynamic perspective that would become New Constellations.

The two debuted with the single, “Hot Blooded,” a poignant exploration of holding space for love that offers warmth and compassion with magnetic flare.
After a monumental first year that included selling out Portland’s own Mission Theater, appearing at A2IM’s Indie Week in NYC, and earning a top-slot placement on @Gorillaz’s “G-Mix 17 by Noodle” (Now: “Noodle Music Friday”) editorial playlist, Harlee and Josh are electric as ever, poising themselves for upcoming releases that can only be described as a continuation of their signature gilded alchemy.
