The band basketball tournament is set to rip it's 8th year of wacky-ball, played half court, between Portland bands on a regulation height basketball hoop attached to a tour van. Rigsketball is open to the public and sign ups are open now. The tournament will take place on July 20th, 21st, 22nd, 26th, and 27th. Seattle’s Wimps (Rachel Ratner, Matt Nyce, and David Ramm) are back with their third album, Garbage People, out July 13th on LP, cassette, CD, and MP3! Known all over as one of the premiere “plenty of nonsense” guitar/bass/drum groups, Garbage People finds Wimps taking a sonic leap forward (there’s saxophone, keyboard, and juuuust enough cowbell) and lyrically (subject matter ranges from gender pay inequality, decline of bee populations as a result of climate change, insomnia, and wanting to steal a pizza ... but only if it’s cheese!) Frog Eyes have made their last album. 17 years after their teetering debut, the Vancouver band unveils Violet Psalms—a giddy lament; a gnashing jubilee; a rain-drenched allocution on hope vs. horror, paradise vs. pride, Marx and Brexit and bad acid trips.
It's an ending like a beginning. "We were trying to pretend it was our first record," Carey Mercer says. This is their final record, Frog Eyes' last gasp—but the art-rockers wanted to capture the energy of a debut, the freedom you feel "when there's no expectation that anyone will actually listen." They made it at home, burrowing under the house where Mercer lives with drummer Melanie Campbell. The goal was to blot out the world, focusing on what they could grow down there, four musicians in a basement. Could they squeeze out ten songs? Was there enough paste in the tube to squeeze out 10? "In the end there was. Which is rad.”
Ural Thomas is, and forever will be Portland's pillar of soul. He started singing beneath his mothers knee in church at the age of 3. By high school he led the doo-wop group the Mono Rays, breaking hearts and taking names at Jefferson High and Irvington Park along the way. Ural's voice and songwriting soon gained national attention and he found himself sharing the stage with the likes of James Brown, Otis Redding, Johnny Guitar Watson and "Little" Stevie Wonder. He played the Apollo 44 times. He backed the Northwest's biggest soul and garage outfits of the1960s (The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Cavaliers Unlimited) and he never for a moment stopped teaching, singing and loving soul music..
Now Ural is poised to represent Portland on equal ground with contemporaries like Lee Fields, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, all of whom ultimately gained their dues in their golden years. To ensure the legacy he's backed by a 9 piece band comprised of the some of the most recognizable session and solo players in town. Band leader/drummer Scott Magee (aka Cooky Parker) has arranged a setlist compiled from the gilded age of soul and R&B and Ural originals, all with a sharp focus on moving the dance floor. The foot stomping days of Jump Town, USA have returned and Ural Thomas & the Pain are here to lead the way.

Shot on three continents, this film provides an inside look at Portland's own Christopher Kirkley’s project “Sahel Sounds” – a blog, record label, and platform to explore arts and music of the Sahel region through non-traditional ethnographic fieldwork. Not a strict portrait, nor a straight music documentary, A STORY OF SAHEL SOUNDS celebrates the wide range of musical performances of current artists from Niger, while leaving room to reflect on today’s role of ethnomusicology. Still held back by asymmetrical power differentials, but now backed up by an expanding globalism and new possibilities to claim their independence, artists try to reach for success - on stages and on cellphones. Featuring early appearances of bands such as Mdou Moctar, Les Filles de Illighadad, Mamman Sani and many more!

HEAR TO BE HEARD: THE STORY OF THE SLITS

A new documentary telling the tale of the formation, journey and end of the seminal Punk/Reggae band The Slits, the world's first all-girl punk band. Forming in London in 1976, they were contemporaries of The Clash & The Sex Pistols, and were the pioneering godmothers of the musical movement known as "Punky Reggae". The film tells the story of the band and the lives of the women involved, from the bands inception in 1976 to the bands end in 2010 coinciding at the death of lead vocalist Ari Up.

Bambi and Cole met on a basketball court, filming a music video for a band that didn’t have any music. After dating for six months, the two married under a blanket of smoke from the season’s forest fires.
Reptaliens quickly evolved from a conceptual collage of ideas into the bedroom recording project for the duo, captured with analog synthesizers, electric guitars, and melodic bass lines, and tape delayed vocals telling stories of science fiction, obsession, and transhumanism.
As long time, active participants in the Portland music scene, Bambi and Cole call on a number of talented musicians to guest on songs throughout the entirety of Reptaliens’ recordings and live performances. The band embraces the captivity of their audience with their sincere and theatrical performances.
Pay attention to the journey, from New Brigade, a juvenile delinquent take on post-punk, full of cold, distant condemnation, and onto the ecstasy of You’re Nothing, shedding the more aggressive hardcore influence and dragging in more light, a tendency followed on Plowing Into The Field Of Love. The intoxication is consistent, this has always been drunk music, but it’s less a stumbling confusion and more a sturdy heartfelt confession with each record. They have finally caught up with their ambition. Their entire charm has always rested in their running ahead of themselves with blind confidence, taunting you to follow and you follow because wherever they are going is vital, is alive; on Beyondless they are treading with an assurance that is disarming, but there is no loss of charm, you are arm in arm now, whispering intimacies.
