Vocalist and composer Xenia Rubinos crafts movingly powerful songs dipping in and out of genre and structure to create a sound that is fearlessly her own. Xenia's powerhouse vocals are at the center of her music which grows from a wide range of influences from R&B to Hip-Hop to Caribbean rhythms and jazz all delivered with a soulful punk aura. Her debut album Magic Trix was released in 2013 by Ba Da Bing! Records to wide critical acclaim. Pitchfork lauded the radiant singer as "a unique new pop personality" while a profile in The New Yorker described her work as "rhythmically fierce, vocally generous music that slips through the net of any known genre". Xenia's energetic live show and presence echoes some of the larger than life iconic singers she admired as a child including Judy Garland, Nina Simone and La Lupe while her powerhouse vocals recall the pop sensibility of Mariah Carey and soulfulness of Erykah Badu. Touring the US and Europe extensively, she has played more than 150 shows both as a headliner and supporting act for such diverse bands as Man Man, Battles, Coco Rosie, and Deerhoof. Xenia has been hard at work on her followup full length LP due out Spring 2016.

Producing since 1997 and MCing since 1993 the Ohmega Watts resume includes two solo records on Ubiquity Records, The Find (2005) and Watts Happening (2007). MC/producer of the group Lightheaded (Tres Records) and a 7" under the name M64, which was comprised of Ohmega on production and Ragen Fykes on the vocals, released on Record Breakin (2009.) Ohmega is also an avid DJ who has toured extensively in the U.S. and abroad including Australia, the E.U. and Japan all the while expanding his record collection, and musical influences. He's performed, DJ'd alongside and supported artists/bands including: Galactic, Lifesavas, The Breakestra, De La Soul, Quantic, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Waajeed, Ge-Ology, Kon & Amir, DJ Spinna, Bobbito Garcia, Rich Medina, Cosmo Baker, and the list goes on. He's also a freelance Graphic Designer/Photographer making him a full-time creative.
Brookfield Duece:
Brookfield Duece arrived on the hip-hop scene in the early 2000's as Duece, a 20 year old rapper whose style provided a chilled, lyrical, storytelling alternative to the rising street dance influenced sound controlling the Bay Area. With soul samples, 808 drums, and funk strings under detailed lyrical ability taught to him by his late cousin Eugene Vasquez from Rochester, NY, Duece brought a message in every song while having both a west and east coast feel. Being the best of both worlds in style put Duece on the frontline in re building an underground hip-hop subculture for the Bay Area.
In 2016, Duece moved from Oakland to Portland to engage with his heaviest fanbase area while continuing to record and build for a debut mainstream release. Continue to look for new things from this artist in 2016

Considered one of the most consistent and talented artists in the Northwest region, MATTY has solidified his reputation through 7 albums and 10 projects total over 7 years. Following his debut album in 2009, MATTY has had an incredible streak of releases, tours and content. A dominant force on stage, his cleaver lyrics, smooth flow and raw talent has allowed him to share the stage with some of the industries best. E-40, Twista, Kid Ink, Too Short, Tech N9ne and a plethora of others, it's easy to say that MATTY has a consistent track record in the studio and on stage.
His networking ability is one of his strongest traits working with producers and other artists from all over the world including Portland heavy hitter's Illmaculate, HANiF, Mic Capes and Tope along with out of state artists such as Mistah F.A.B, Marv Won and Chase Moore.

Samuel Troxel, bka Trox, is a Portland bred and based producer and DJ. His introduction to music started with taking drum lessons during the 2nd grade and eventually graduating to downloading an early version of Fruity Loops in middle school. In addition to working with almost every Northwest heavyweight, he has also crafted tracks for 50 Cent, Ab-Soul, Royce 5'9" and more. He currently is in the process of releasing his collaborative project with Ty Farris titled Room 39.

The Portland Black Music Festival celebrates the immense variety of local Black contributions to music in genres including, but not limited to, jazz, soul, and R & B. Encouraging appreciation for Black culture and heritage, the festivities will highlight high quality, live musical performances from homegrown talent and will emphasize community empowerment.
Over the course of a year, trumpeter/educator Farnell Newton and musician/producer Tony Ozier began to grow the festival idea in conversations, during rehearsals, on road trips, and at family gatherings. These conversations grew, and the festival was publicly announced on an April 2016 segment of OPB's "State of Wonder" hosted by April Baer. Baer's interview with Ozier and Newton led them to announce the festival and speak it into reality. Once plans were made public, Newton reached out to DJ and community activist DJ O.G.One to partner and develop the festival.
This trio of artists and active community members has used their music connections and community resources to secure support from media partners (including KMHD, Oregon Music News, KBOO, 107.5, Portland Radio Project, and XRAY.FM) and to establish the festival in its first year. They are also planning for the festival's growth and possible impact in years to come. Over time, Newton, Ozier, and DJ O.G. One hope to cultivate a stronger music community and to give participating Portland musicians increased exposure. Ultimately, the goal is to empower Black artists and to bring people together to celebrate and work together on musical and social issues.

From September 08–18, 2016, PICA’s Time-Based Art Festival activates the city of Portland, Oregon, with contemporary art projects that bring artists and audiences together, creating a vibrant community through live performances, music, screenings, workshops, talks, and visual art installations.
TBA is resolutely interdisciplinary, and champions those artists who are challenging forms and working across mediums, from dance to performance to visual art. TBA's spectacular 14th year features artists from near and far that urgently reflect our current cultural moment. TBA is a global festival, exposing audiences to artists from regions not normally presented in the US, with projects this year hailing from Lebanon, Bulgaria, South Korea, France, and beyond.

Over the last 30 months, we’ve produced both an exceptional amount of good work and a considerable lot of off-cuts, rejects and goof-ups in the process - materials which most of the time end up at a landfill somewhere far, far off-camera. Not being big fans of waste, we’ve saved piles and piles of these materials and this summer, the time has come to turn them into good things instead.
With the help of a select group of our favorite designers and makers we’re going to do just that and sell these good things at a late-summer Saturday parking lot party at our shop on SE 26th & Division Street. Proceeds from all sales will be split between the makers and our chosen charity, the one and only XRAY.FM. The book features reports from famous and infamous punks who lent their voices to chronicle a musical and social revolution, including lggy Pop, Richard Hell, Patti Smith, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone, Malcolm McLaren, Jim Carroll, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed and many more.
As 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Please Kill Me, Grove Press is issuing a special edition of the book complete with new photos, interviews and an afterword by authors Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. When Please Kill Me came out in 1996 it was revolutionary, not just because it unabashedly chronicled America's punk movement through first-hand accounts, but because it helped to popularize the oral history style, later perfected in Edie: American Girl by Jean Stein and George Plimpton. McNeil and McCain sum up the beauty of the form: “The narrative oral history is such an incredible format because it draws from every art form,” they write, “the chapters have the rhythm of song, the cuts are cinematic, newspaper headlines can punctuate incidents, slang is celebrated, and first-hand accounts bring the poetry of the spoken word.”
In celebration of the anniversary, Ace Hotel – who cites punk amongst its influences – is honored to host a series of events across six properties, which will combine readings by the authors along with DJ parties and festivities to mark the occasion.

The Stumptown Improv Festival’s first two years have been bonkers (or, as Jed likes to say, “bonkerz”). We’ve sold out shows and forced audience members to sign up for obscenely long waiting lists. We’ve attracted some of the most well-regarded improv groups performing today from LA, NYC, San Franscisco, Vancouver, BC, Minneapolis, and, of course, Portland. Performers who are vets on the festival scene have raved that “this is one of the best festivals we’ve ever been a part of”. We’ve offered huge gift bags to our comedians and gave people leather coasters embossed with our logo. We are OUT OF CONTROL.
Will we “rock steady” again in 2016? Answer: will will “steady rock all night long”. We’re going to alleviate those aforementioned waiting lists because we’re heading across the river to Artists Repertory Theatre! More seats = more comedy. Check out the 12th annual program of cinema under the stars. Doors open at 7 pm with food and beverages available for purchase from Gracie’s, Aladdin’s Café, Brass Tacks Sandwiches, and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Music begins at 8 pm and films begin around dusk. Entry for advance ticket holders is guaranteed until 8:30 pm. Advance tickets ensure that you will not have to wait in the ticket purchase line but do not guarantee entry after 8:30 pm. A limited number of chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so feel free to bring a chair, pillow, or blanket, along with a light sweater or jacket. Advance ticket holders who arrive after 8:30 pm but are not admitted to the screening (in the case of a sell-out) may exchange their tickets for another Top Down screening. There are no refunds or exchanges for arrivals after the film begins (c. 9 pm) or for entirely missed screenings. Please, no pets or outside food or drink.
