Death Valley Girls feels less like a band and more like a travelling caravan. At their core, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel channel Death Valley Girls’ modern spin on Fun House’s sonic exorcisms, early ZZ Top’s desert-blasted riffage, and Sabbath’s occult menace. Their relentless touring schedule means that the remainder of the group is rounded out by whichever like-minded compatriots can get in the van. On their third album Darkness Rains, bassist Alana Amram, drummer Laura Harris, and a rotating cast of guests like Shannon Lay, The Kid (Laura Kelsey), and members of The Make Up, The Shivas, and Moaning help elevate the band from their rogue beginnings to a communal ritualistic musical force. On the surface level, Death Valley Girls churn out the hypercharged, in the red, scuzzy rock every generation yearns for, but there is a more subversive force percolating beneath the surface that imbues the band with an exhilarating cosmic energy.

NOVEMBER 10TH, 2019
12 PM TO 6 PM at Polaris Hall

Attention Portland musicians, producers, home recordists, aspiring inventors, innovators, gear heads, synth nerds, drum fanatics, shoegazers, head bangers, and audiophiles! Come to the first event that celebrates the intersection of artistry, technology, and our city of music. Come and experience it as you meet the makers, try out and buy the gear and instruments.

Portland is an unsung, multi-million dollar hotbed of music manufacturing innovation, variety and quality.   Portland is the only metro of its size that can produce a complete musical equipment backline, end to end with the highest quality hand-built gear and instruments.  Some Portland-area brands are internationally respected and unique, others are new innovators who keep pushing the envelope in entirely new ways.  They all chose to do it in Portland, a city that celebrates iconoclasts and rule breakers. This event celebrates these innovators and seeks to validate and promote the vibrancy of the music manufacturing sector in our city.

BUSHWICK BILL: GETO BOY

SERIES: SONIC CINEMA

Director Greg Roman in attendance! A tribute to Bushwick Bill (1966-2019).

Censorship couldn't silence him, size couldn't limit him, and a bullet couldn't slow him down. BUSHWICK BILL: GETO BOY is a raw, cinematic documentary chronicling the life of one of the most notorious gangster rappers of all time.

He stood 4' 2" tall, had one eye, and was an integral part of the The Geto Boys' seminal album "We Can't Be Stopped," and their hit songs "My Mind Playing Tricks On Me" and "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster." As a character study, the film reveals a more mature Richard Shaw (aka Bushwick Bill) reflecting on his highly controversial life, his rise to cult stardom, and the exploitation at the hands of record companies that left him broke, homeless, and even suicidal.

Take a once-in-a-lifetime journey as Bill recounts his most memorable triumphs and failures, both public and private. This film has taken on new meaning with the recent and untimely passing of Bushwick Bill.

Sponsored by XRAY FM, Music Millennium and Lagunitas.

Katherine Paul is Black Belt Eagle Scout. Released in September of 2018, Mother of My Children was the debut album from Black Belt Eagle Scout, the recording project of Katherine Paul. Heralded as a favorite new musician of 2018 by the likes of NPR Music, Stereogum, and Paste, the album was also named as a “Best Rock Album of 2018” by Pitchfork, and garnered further end-of-year praise from FADER, Under The Radar and more.

Arriving just a year after that debut record, At the Party With My Brown Friends is a brand new full-length recording from Black Belt Eagle Scout. Where that first record was a snapshot of loss and landscape and of KP’s standing as a radical indigenous queer feminist, this new chapter finds its power in love, desire and friendship.

At the Party With My Brown Friends is a profound and understated forward step. The squalling guitar anthems that shaped its predecessor are replaced by delicate vocals and soft keys, sentiments spoken and unspoken, presenting something shadowy and unsettling; a stirring of the waters.

The end result presents a captivating about-face that redefines KP’s beautifully singular artistic vision.

Join us for a free film showing and lively community discussion! The urban champion Jane Jacobs had a special relationship with the City of Portland over its evolution as diverse place of mixed uses and walkable neighborhoods. Jacobs championed lively, diverse neighborhoods, and citizen activism to preserve urban communities in the face of destructive development projects. Arguably no one did more to shape our understanding of the modern American city than this visionary activist.

The film will be opened with a brief introduction by Chet Orloff, Oregon historian and author, followed by a Q&A after the film with noted community leaders including Sabina Urdes, a community engagement specialist and chair of the Lents Neighborhood Association. With audience input, we will be discussing Portland’s changing civic relationship with city government, and the fight for neighborhood structure preservation. Citizen Jane is a timely tale of what can happen when engaged citizens fight power for the sake of better cities.

Co-sponsored by the NW Examiner, XRAY.FM, and KeepPortlandNeighborly.org
