It's time for the 39th Portland International Film Festival, the Northwest Film Center’s annual showcase of new world cinema. Like the Film Center’s Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival, which surveys outstanding new work by our region’s media makers, through 97 features and 62 short films from three-dozen countries, the Portland International Film Festival explores not only the art of film but also the world around us, no matter the place or the language spoken.

LOW is coming to town!

Low
"While driving though Chicago, on tour, we stopped finally to visit Wilco at their studio, The Loft. They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years, but this would finally be the day. It's a great place—a sea of instruments in a relaxed, open working environment. It's cool, but what really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on: big, simple, raw, and intimate. Plans were made then and there.

'Don't break my Grammy streak.'
We have worked with many of the great engineer/producers. Jeff Tweedy has been on our side of the microphone for over 25 years, however with engineer (and fellow Grammy winner) Tom Schick, he has of late become a formidable and eclectic producer. He spoke a language we understood, but then took us effortlessly into the mystery.

We've made many records, and you know our M.O.: slow, quiet, sometimes melancholy, and, we hope, sometimes pretty…
How is this different from any other Low record?
- Mimi sings lead on five of the eleven songs (she usually only does one or two, despite being a fan favorite).
- Piano, lots of piano… and an acoustic guitar.
- Songs about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war war, archaeology, and love.

Thank you for your time again and please enjoy what we made. I think it's beautiful."
ANDY SHAUF
Andy Shauf
Andy Shauf is a storyteller, a singer of heartbreak and regrets, isolation and loneliness, reflecting his prairie surroundings in Regina, Canada. Meticulously written over four years, Shauf's The Bearer of Bad News is a warm and welcoming album, bathed in weathered piano, dampened drums, softly-strummed guitars and clarinet, which lends its unique timbre to frequently brighten – or hauntingly underscore – the songs' darker undercurrents. Fans of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Harry Nilsson, take note.

East Portland Eagle Lodge (4904 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97215)
9:00pm Saturday, October 31, 2015

Dear Bill Murray,

We'd like to invite you to Portland to party this Halloween. We're throwing a "Ghostbusters Ball" at the Eagles Lodge on SE Hawthorne and it's just your kind of place -- cheap drinks, saucy old bartenders, no pretense and plenty of dark corners to creep around in. We'll be playing a ton of killer dance tunes (all four of us DJs play at Dig A Pony regularly...a bar we hear you've been to). Be prepared for a litany of underrepresented 80s tracks + early 90s electro and freestyle. There will be some cool vids projected, too.

We know that you like to ride your golf cart to parties in places that you don't live so we've arranged for a golf cart be on the tarmac when your flight arrives so that you can roll to the party in proper Bill Murray fashion.

Ok, well, let us know if you think you'll make it.

Your Pals,
Cooky, Bobby, Lamar & Jimbo
