Shirley Nanette:
Shirley Nanette has long been recognized by the regional music community for her dynamic vocal sensibility—performing jazz and classical works at festivals, on television, and with the Oregon Symphony as well as earning her a place in the Oregon Music Hall Of Fame. Less is known, however, about the degree to which her vocal work pulls from the roots of soul music. In 1973, Nanette released an LP entitled Never Coming Back. Featuring a cast of Albina area musicians, the record has been lauded by some as a critical piece of Portland soul music history. Tonight’s program will feature Shirley Nanette performing her seminal LP Never Coming Back in its entirety.
Albina Soul Revue Band:
The Albina Soul Revue Band is an intergenerational group of Portland musicians under the direction of Tony Ozier. Since 2009, Ozier's "Dookie Jam" has served as an open forum for rappers, producers, and jazz musicians alike. With the Albina Soul Revue Band, Ozier has enlisted a veritable dream team of local heavies to perform original Albina soul music from the 1960s-80s. The group features Kenney Polson (Gil Scott-Heron, Jimmy Heath, Wynton Marsalis), Danny Osborne (Billy Graham, Shirley Nanette), Marquay Seamster (Prince), Kyle Molitor (Bootsy Collins), Noah Simpson (Noah Simpson Group), Dennis Dove (World Beat Collective), Ben "Snacks" Turner (KMHD, Dirty Revival), and Colin Jenkins (Ages and Ages).
Jon Kirby:
Jonathan Kirby is a record collector, author, and producer with the esteemed reissue label, the Numero Group. From 2007 to 2010, he served as the Associate Editor for the Brooklyn-based music journal, Wax Poetics, before joining the Numero Group in 2011. He has been nominated for two Grammys in relation to his archival work—in 2014 for his expansive liner notes for Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound and again in 2017 for producing Bobo Yeye: Belle Epoque in Upper Volta. He has recently returned to his home in Winston-Salem to intensify research and preservation of the underrated, unknown, and marginalized musicians of North Carolina.

Bobby D:
An elementary school teacher by day, Bobby Smith is a writer, disc jockey, and local media archivist by night. His Night School program on XRAY FM has served the Albina musician community since 2014. In partnership with Portland arts and education non-profit, World Arts Foundation, he founded the Albina Music Trust––an initiative to elevate 20th century Albina musicians through storytelling, performance, and releasing unissued local soul records. He has been a contributing writer for Wax Poetics, Hot Stuff Magazine, and Portland Mercury.

Movie soundtracks, Heavy Synth & Dark Dance music. The cross over between movies & music is where VCR TV will take you. Dj Kyle-Reese is your guide.
Come help celebrate XRAY.FM's Songs From Under the Floorboard's 300th show with a live presentation of the first three bands to appear on the air for an interview with DJ Dave Cantrell. First up, from We Are Like The Spider, lead singer Lucia Luna will present a set of ethereal darkwave, followed by brilliant, eternal local favorites Vice Device, then finished off with interviewees #3 Arctic Flowers, who we have to assume will still - most deservedly - be in their own celebrating mood after the recent release of new album "Straight to the Hunter." All proceeds will flow to the bands and to the Out From the Shadows V festival occurring April 4/5/6 at Tonic Lounge. The new year, off with a brilliant bang...

Catch DJ Kittybot on XRAY.FM Mondays from 3-5 AM!
Join DJ Yoni of XRAY's The Impact Sound, DJing at The Secret Society along with sets from The Bandulus, and Buddy Jay's Jamaican Jazz Band!
The Bandulus are the brainchild of Jeremy Peña, formerly of Los Skarnales and The Trenchtown Texans. After the 2006 break-up of Los Skarnales and leaving Trenchtown Texans in 2010, Jeremy decided to venture out on his own and create the traditional ska, reggae, and soul sensation that is The Bandulus.
Buddy Jay's Jamaican Jazz Band was formed in 2012 by Saxophonist Buddy Jay Kieffer and Trumpeter John England Fisher. A deep respect for all music Jamaican brought them together. After amassing an all star line up of Portland based musicians, they set out to do the ska. Writing original Jamaican jazz and rocksteady tunes designed for dancing has been the delight of both band members and audiences.
The IMPACT! Hi-Fi, a hand built soundsystem inspired by the legendary systems of the 60's, is making its debut at Misdemeanor Meadows for an evening of ska, rocksteady, boss reggae, and roots. Two turntables and some big old speakers will be shaking the house for an early evening of reggae music. Start your evening off right with a trip through the Meadows and an ear full of reggae.
Everyday Mixtapes & KBOO Present:
ILL CAMILLE: http://www.illcamille.com/
After building her name up through LA’s underground, Ill Camille took a professional hiatus due to hardships that forced her to grow both personally and musically. Always stressing the importance of God and family before everything else, since finding the light at the end of the tunnel she has designed Heirloom as a collection of stories dedicated to keeping
her head on straight in the midst of turbulence.
Ill Camille’s divine mission to uplift the world through Heirloom is an extension of ancestry that includes musicians and fighters whose spirits make her art a necessity. Translating her tumultuous past few years through cathartic soulful Hip-Hop, creating this album was key to maintaining her sanity as she notes “I don’t think I had a choice in the
matter”.
Despite self-awareness being at the core of who Ill Camille is on and off of the mic, the bittersweet beauty of her most introspective release to date is the life struggle contained within her songs. Heirloom details all she’s experienced since 2012’s Illustrated, from losing relatives to incarceration and death, her own health complications and mistakes made diving headfirst into love and lust.
Evidenced by Heirloom’s lead single “Almost There” (which features recent TDE signee SiR), and her follow up “Home”, Ill Camille is able to shine by simply relaying her innermost truths for the world to relate to. Never overthinking the process in figuring out her path, she says “I let the spirit in my feeling guide me in everything, I didn’t plan anything out. Your music should reflect the mental space you’re in at the time, I have a moral
obligation to put that on my records.”
A window into Ill Camille’s upbringing, last four years and days to come, Heirloom represents a rebirth with her continuing to evolve as a woman before being a warrior. In the end, inner strength and communal support triumphed over her setbacks and obstacles, with Camille summing up the experience saying “I was inspired to finish this project because I owed it to myself and the people around me the respect to show my appreciation for them.” Having used pressure to form a diamond, this latest body of work
promises to speak for past, present and future generations of confused souls determined to become hopeful survivors.
Heirloom has received press on the blog of Solange’s label, Saint Heron, in Brooklyn Vegan, LA Weekly, and NPR's 21 Hip Hop Albums That Reflected The Politics of Race, Space, and Place in 2017.
FRITZWA: https://fritzwa.bandcamp.com/

She say’s, “I see art in everything,” and it’s something she translates into her music —

Whether she’s finding painful beauty in break-ups, or creating melodic soundscapes from NYC’s subway ambience, Fritzwa’s creativity and musical talent shine through in a beautiful way.
