Sir Richard Bishop and Descending Pharaohs present a special evening of conjuring and deviance for a rare live show w/ film accompaniment at the historic Clinton St. Theater on Friday, May 19th, 8pm sharp.

Sir Richard Bishop is an American composer, guitarist and singer best known as a founding member of experimental rock Sun City Girls, who during their 26 years (1981–2007), produced an extensive discography of over 50 full length albums. He has toured with Will Oldham, Animal Collective, Bill Callahan, and many others. His solo work,  along with his band Rangda, has released several albums on Drag City and other labels such as 2182 Recording Co., Southern Lord, Southern, Locust, Unrock, VDSQ, and Revenant Records.  

Descending Pharaohs are an ethno-psych project, vibing fight scenes of near-eastern films and guided by Arabic/Anatolian electric, spiritual jazz, and heavy psych.  Live, they are accompanied by a backdrop film collage that matches their heady Middle Eastern sounds made by the oud, saz, baglama, guitar, bass and drum kit.

8th Vanport Mosaic Festival

Join us for two weeks of memory activism to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport - and to honor the community that called Vanport home.

From May 18th to May 29th, the 8th Vanport Mosaic Festival will offer in-person, virtual, and self-paced memory activism opportunities to Remember, Repair, Reclaim, and Re-image our collective story.

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport, once Oregon’s second-largest city and the largest WWII federal housing project in the United States.  We will commemorate Oregon’s Katrina-like disaster with exhibits, art performances, a reunion/celebration of former Vanport residents, documentary screenings and oral history recordings, tours of the historic Vanport area, and community engagement activities.

Flood survivors are now in their 80s and 90s, so the Festival offers a long-overdue opportunity to honor and learn from their experience. The 75th anniversary of the flood, especially in light of the Covid pandemic and the ongoing devastating impact of climate change, will offer a timely opportunity to reflect on the state of emergency preparedness of our city, particularly on how disasters often replicate and deepen social inequalities.

Beaches Crew, The Grand Yoni, and Wayward Girls Soul Club are taking their shows out of our basement studios and into the outside world! And when we say outside world we mean the lush tropical wonderland that is Hey Love and their scrumptious brunch menu we count down to the weekend for.

The crew will be doing all-vinyl showcase AND broadcasting live from 12 to 4pm Saturday, April 8th. And of course—you’ll also see an XRAY cast of characters around as we take the excuse to spend time at one of our fav hangouts and grab the ever-important Saturday brunch. This crew epitomizes the kind of tight-knit community we’re cultivating here—and the gems of lo-fi, reggae, and soul they bring to the decks every week certainly don’t hurt either.

Mississippi Records Music & Film Series 20 Year Anniversary Celebration Presents: 

Off The Charts – A Documentary & Song Contest with Live Bands

On Thursday, February 23rd, Mississippi Records will be showing an excellent and touching documentary about the song poem industry called "Off The Charts." Trust us, it's a stunner. After the movie, five bands will interpret song poems written by YOU.

Bands playing are -

• The Grand Style Orchestra
• Cruise Control.

   - Each performing one song poem. A celebrity panel of judges will pick a winner. 

This is Mississippi Records' second Song Poem contest. The winner last time had just been out of prison for a week when he spied our ad for the competition at an unemployment office. While he had never done any creative writing, he decided to give it a go because he could use the prize money. After he won, he proclaimed, "I now know who I am. I am a poet." Hearing these words was perhaps the most moving moment of my life.

Curated by Roya Amirsoleymani and Felisha Ledesma, Remembering to Remember: Experiments in Sound is a multifaceted program of 15+ international, national, and local artists spanning six live performances; five newly commissioned multichannel compositions; four film/video works at the intersection of sound and moving image; and one month of artist residencies, community workshops, and public engagements. 

The container for this breadth of programming is an exhibition that will be on view at PICA from February 17 to March 19, 2023, with an opening reception on Friday, February 17, 2023, 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Artists include Adee Roberson, Alison O’Daniel, bone lattice, Crystal Quartez, Hiro Kone, Kite & Robbie Wing, Lucy Liyou, Nivhek, Nyokabi Kariũki, Reese Bowes, Saint Abdullah, Sholeh Asgary, Synth Library Portland, Takashi Makino, and Tomoko Sauvage.

Remembering to Remember is a collection and collision of impressions and inquiries. It recognizes the rich histories and vibrant communities of sound art in Portland while offering a dynamic experience of new and recent work in experimental sound across forms by artists from around the world.

ACCESS NOTES

The exhibition and performances in Remembering to Remember: Experiments in Sound contain sounds at a range of volumes and frequencies, some of which might be challenging, uncomfortable, or unfamiliar to some visitors and attendees. The sounds in the multichannel installation and live performances are experienced throughout the room, while the film and video works use individual headphones. Free earplugs will be available at the entrance to the gallery and for live performances. You may exit and re-enter at any time at no cost.  

To request or inquire about access needs for the exhibition, performances, and/or workshops in Remembering to Remember, please email madison@pica.org. For ASL interpretation, audio description, and/or other forms of access that require advance scheduling, please submit a request at least two (2) weeks in advance of the date you require accommodation so that we can do our best to meet your needs.  

Masks are currently required in the gallery and for all live performances at PICA.

NOTES ABOUT THE WHO CARES CLOCK

Conceived of and edited by PICA’s Artistic Director & Curator of Visual Art, Kristan Kennedy, The Who Cares Clock is a time-based print project released at random, for free, and only through the mail. For Remembering to Remember, Kennedy will release a special, limited edition postcard of sound work by artist and curator Felisha Ledesma, which will be playable by turntable. Stay tuned for an announcement of this project’s near-future release and instructions for how to request a copy.

A History of North Portland Music with Calvin Walker & Bobby Smith

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Free and open to the public

Portland musicians and Albina Music Trust founders, Calvin Walker (XRAY FM Board Member) and Bobby Smith (former host of Night School on XRAY) will discuss the vibrant Black music culture of North Portland from the 1960s through the 1980s and the political and cultural changes that immobilized it. This event is part of Beaverton City Library’s One Book, One Beaverton community-wide read program.

Klyph Notes Live is starting the new year featuring Oregon Music Hall
of Fame inductee Cool Nutz.

A man who has represented Portland Hip Hop all over the world has a
lot happening and we'll cover it all (or as much as we can) including
his hall of fame induction, his new album with Maniac Loc, being on
the road tour managing for Creed Bratton...

We're also excited to be in a new location at Portland Center Stage, a
great venue in the northwest portion of the city. The live podcast
recording will now be an ALL AGES event and we'll have a number of
vendors in the building including our sponsor Akepele Apperal.

DJ O.G.ONE will be providing the soundtrack for the event that will
feature the interview, an audience Q&A and a special performance by my
guest, Cool Nutz.

This event is FREE, so lock the date in and be a part of this love
